PulpFest 2023 is very happy to welcome ERBFest back for a second go-round. ERBFest is an informal gathering of the fans of bestselling writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the master of adventure. The creator of Tarzan of the Apes, Pellucidar, The Land that Time Forgot, Carson Napier of Venus, and John Carter of Mars, what better place to have a Burroughs festival than Barsoom . . . Mars, Pennsylvania?
As part of ERBFest 2023, Henry Franke will host an art show inspired by the stories and characters of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It will take place in the Chestnut Room on the first floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry from 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm on both Friday, August 4, and Saturday, August 5.
Including our lead image above, “Inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs” will feature original art used for book covers, comic books, newspaper comic strips, and more.
Painted by Ed Emshwiller, the original artwok above was created for the first Ace Books’ paperback edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Moon Maid. When Ace ultimately released the Burroughs novel in 1962, Emsh’s cover art was replaced by a Roy G. Krenkel painting.
Additional artwork will include Robert K. Abbett’s original artwork for the Ballantine Books’ 1963 first printing of Synthetic Men of Mars — excerpted for the featured image that heads our post — and Gray Morrow’s original art for the Tarzan Sunday comic strip dated January 14, 2000.
