PulpFest

ERBFest 2023

Thanks to the efforts of Henry G. Franke III of the Burroughs Bibliophiles, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., and the PulpFest organizing committee, ERBFest will be returning to this year’s PulpFest.

Debuting in 2021 when it seemed as if a second summer was going to pass without the usual Burroughs conventions, ERBFest is an informal gathering of the fans of bestselling writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the master of adventure. The creator of Tarzan of the Apes, Pellucidar, The Land that Time Forgot, Carson Napier of Venus, and John Carter of Mars, what better place to have a Burroughs festival than Barsoom . . . Mars, Pennsylvania? And what better year than 2023 to bring back ERBFest for another go-round?

One hundred years ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs founded his own company and became the first author to incorporate himself. Today Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., is still owned by his heirs; operates out of Tarzana, California, on the property of Mr. Burroughs’ former ranch; and actively promotes his legacy and licenses the rights to his works of wonder and imagination.

We’ll be not only celebrating the centennial of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., but also the 100th anniversary of the author’s Moon Trilogy. Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “The Moon Maid” debuted as a serialized novel in the pages of Frank Munsey’s Argosy All-Story Weekly in 1923.

If that’s not enough, we’ll also take a look at the Tarzan series and jungle adventures in the pulps, celebrated Burroughs artist J. Allen St. John, hold an Edgar Rice Burroughs-themed art show — hosted by Henry Franke — and even stage a Barsoomian Bull Session. It’s all part of ERBFest 2023, taking place at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry from August 3 – 6.

To help celebrate this year’s ERBFest, Jim Gerlach of ERB Books has donated one of his fantastic collector’s editions to PulpFest 2023. We’ll be raffling off The Letterpress Edition of At the Earth’s Core at this year’s convention.

Authorized by and published under the imprint of ERB Inc. of Tarzana, California, the seventh title in the ERB Limited Edition Collection will be raffled off on Saturday evening, August 5, at 8:50 pm. Tickets will be available at the PulpFest 2023 registration desk for $5. You don’t need to be present at the drawing to win.

If you are not able to attend PulpFest 2023 but would like a chance to win a copy of At the Earth’s Coreyou can purchase a ticket online. Just click the PayPal button below or write to Jack Cullers at jack@pulpfest.com for additional details. Online tickets are $6. Buy as many tickets as you want for a chance to win a copy of At the Earth’s Core, a $300 value. This offer is only good for residents of the United States.

Also helping with this year’s ERBFest, Phil Normand of Recoverings has donated a reconstructed first-edition dust jacket for Tarzan of the Apes. It’s lot #78 in our PulpFest auction. You can place your bid at the convention or online. Visit our auction page by clicking the auction button at the top of our homepage to learn more or to place an online silent bid.

The fine folks of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. have also sent us softcover copies of several books from their Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe™ line and popular Jane Porter® comic book series to serve as door prizes. Director of Publishing, Christopher Paul Carey, has also contributed a number of audiobooks inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Many thanks to both Chris and ERB, Inc. for helping us celebrate this year’s ERBFest.

But there’s one more offer! If you join the Burroughs Bibliophiles as a new member during ERBFest/PulpFest, a free issue of The Burroughs Bulletin will be added to your membership. See Henry Franke or Gary Buckingham at the Burroughs Bibliophiles dealer’s table or at the art show.

For those who want to be part of this year’s ERBFest, click the Registration button at the top of this page. Your PulpFest membership also provides you with a membership to ERBFest and FarmerCon XVIII. That’s three conventions for the price of one!

Additionally, your membership badge will let you into the PulpFest Dealers’ Room where you’ll get to meet Gary Buckingham, Christopher Paul Carey, Mike Conran, Henry G. Franke III, Bob McGeeney, Mark & Carol Wheatley, Cathy Wilbanks, and other sellers of Burroughs-related merchandise and collectibles.

And if you’re able — rooms are scarce — don’t forget to book a room at the DoubleTree. If you can’t find a room, the DoubleTree recommends the Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, or Home2 Suites. They’re all just a few miles away from our host hotel. Click here to learn more.

The general public is welcome to attend our evening programming events free of charge. To learn more about our Burroughs-related programming, please click the “Schedule” button on our homepage or look below for a concise preview of ERBFest 2023.

Our ERBFest logo was designed by William Lampkin.

Our lead image was adapted by PulpFest advertising director William Lampkin from J. Allen St. John’s dust jacket art for the first edition of At the Earth’s Core. The first novel in the Pellucidar series, it was originally serialized by Munsey’s All-Story Weekly during April 1914. It was published in book form by A. C. McClurg in 1922.

The “Moon Maid” centennial logo was designed by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., using artwork excerpted from J. Allen St. John’s dust jacket art for the first edition of The Moon Maid, published by A. C. McClurg in 1926.  The book included all three segments of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Moon Trilogy.”
