We hope to see all of you in the coming year — along with many newcomers — for PulpFest 2027. We’ll be saluting the 90th anniversary of the debut of The Shadow radio drama, featuring a young Orson Welles in the role of the title character. It premiered as a half-hour radio series on September 26, 1937. We’ll be celebrating that and a great deal more at PulpFest 2027. And don’t forget about our associated conventions — Doc Con 2027, FarmerCon XXII, and The Shadow Con 2027, the first convention to be dedicated to the “Master of Darkness.” The Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship gathering will also take place at next year’s PulpFest. Our guest of honor will be William Preston, author of “The Old Man” stories for Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine.

Our featured image was excerpted from Alex Schomburg’s cover art for the February 1964 issue of Amazing Stories, while our lead image was adapted by William Lampkin from Ed Valigursky’s cover for the January 1955 issue of Amazing. Schomburg, who is best known for creating more than 500 covers for comic books, painted twenty covers for Amazing Stories, with all but two of them contributed between 1960 and 1965.
The Munsey Award was created in 2009 by artist David Saunders, the son of legendary illustrator Norman Saunders. Dan Zimmer of The Illustrated Press produced a limited, signed, and numbered edition of the award. The print also serves as the Rusty Award. The PulpFest Organizing Committee is indebted to both David and Dan for their generous support of our community.
Our final image was adapted by William Lampkin from George Rozen’s cover art for The Shadow for May 1, 1938, illustrating Walter B. Gibson’s novel, “Cards of Death,” and celebrating The Shadow on the Mutual Broadcasting System.
