PulpFest 2026 will celebrate the centennials of Amazing Stories and Ghost Stories, plus a great deal more at this year’s convention. Hugo Gernsback’s groundbreaking science-fiction pulp and Bernarr Macfadden’s purportedly “true” magazine concerning the spirit world both debuted one hundred years ago.
In addition to our salutes to these two historical pulp magazines, we’ll also welcome back the “Fans of Bronze” for Doc Con 2026. This year’s Doc Savage convention will pay tribute to The Bronze Gazette and more!
Since its debut in 1990, The Bronze Gazette has served as the premier publication dedicated entirely to the Man of Bronze, offering in-depth articles, artwork, and expert commentary on everything from the original pulp adventures to modern adaptations and Doc Savage collectibles.
Per Chuck Welch, the current publisher of The Bronze Gazette:
“For longtime fans of Doc Savage, Bronze Gazette is more than just a fanzine; it is one of the cornerstones of our community.”
We hope you’ll join Doc Con on Saturday, August 1, at 12:30 pm as we welcome Anthony Rais and Howard Wright to the PulpFest programming stage for “The Bronze Gazette,” a look at the founding and the history of the fanzine published for the “Fans of Bronze.”

Howard Wright was the editor and publisher of The Bronze Gazette for twenty-five years. He created his magazine when there was no real Internet and very little information readily available about Lester Dent’s “Man of Bronze.” His main reason for starting the publication was to gather information about Doc Savage, disseminate this news to the “Fans of Bronze,” and keep Doc fans going during the “lean” years when Doc was, for the most part, a mere memory. Through Howard’s sustained efforts, interest in Doc was maintained, and his return to the limelight was assured. His final issue of the Gazette was published at the beginning of 2016. Although he no longer edits and publishes The Bronze Gazette, Howard still writes for the long-running fanzine.
Anthony Rais became a fan of Doc Savage when he found copies of the Bantam paperbacks in his hometown library during the mid-1970s. He was able to pick up copies of Doc Savage that the library didn’t have at a local bookstore. He was a member of the last two Arizona Doc Cons and is very happy to be a part of Doc Con 2026. Having worked in Information Technology for over 30 years, Anthony is creating a database of all the articles and artwork found in Howard Wright’s issues of The Bronze Gazette. Employed by the Georgia Student Finance Commission, Anthony hopes to make his index available to Doc Savage fans as an Excel file.
PulpFest 2026 begins on July 30 and runs through August 2 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. In addition to honoring the centennials of Amazing Stories and Ghost Stories, we’ll also be celebrating the sesquicentennial of writer Jack London’s birth, the centennial of the birth of artist Robert Kennedy Abbett, and more at this year’s convention.

Our featured image was excerpted from a painting by award-winning artist Mark Wheatley, in which he imagines Doc Savage as the character might have appeared if first published in Collier’s Magazine. Mark’s painting was used as the cover art for The Bronze Gazette, issue number 93, dated April 2023.
Our lead image was adapted by William Lampkin from Tim Faroute’s cover for the 75th issue of The Bronze Gazette. It was published by Howard Wright in January 2016 and was the final issue of his run of the fanzine that he founded in 1990. That’s Howard holding Habeus Corpus on the cover.
Ron Hill, one of the organizers of Doc Con, contributed the cover art for The Bronze Gazette #97, published by Chuck Welch, the current publisher of the long-running fanzine. In addition to helping organize Doc Con, Ron was the writer, director, cinematographer, and editor of We Are Doc Savage, a documentary celebrating Doc Savage fandom and its enduring legacy.
