Not only is PulpFest lauded for its excellent programming, it is also known for its very substantial dealers’ room.
Beginning on Thursday, July 26, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry will be home to thousands of collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and more.
Who are we expecting at PulpFest 2018? This week, we’ve been profiling our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them to help you know them . . .
Landlubber CHRISTOPHER RYAN never expected to be waylaid when he cut through the alley to save some time. Shanghaied aboard a vessel bound for parts unknown, Christopher would find treasure intended for “Summer’s Great Pulp Con.” You’ll have to stop by his table to learn just what it was that he discovered.
A full-time proprietor of an antique toy shop by day and a mystery mavin by night, JOSEPH SAINE returns to PulpFest after a few years’ absence. Hailing from northwest Ohio, among Joe’s treasures will be a variety of pulps, Big Little Books, quality paperbacks, and over fifty radio premiums and some early character badges. A professional auctioneer, Joe is one of the leading dealers of antique toys and toy soldiers in the Midwest.
PulpFest would like to welcome BUDDY SAUNDERS and his team from LONE STAR COMICS to this year’s convention. Selling comics since 1961, Buddy and his team will be visiting Mars, Pennsylvania with cash on the barrel. They buy Golden, Silver, and Bronze Age comics as well as high-grade Modern. They’re also in the market for pulps and other collectibles, including paperbacks with cover prices of 75¢ or less. Buddy tells us that they’re especially interested in vintage paperbacks. Mystery man LAURENCE SCHWINGER followed a trail of pulp chips to western Pennsylvania, only to find a collectors gathering at a hotel in Mars. What will The Dark Avenger do as he enters the pop culture center of the universe for his first PulpFest? Stop by his table and lend him a hand, as he sells for the first time at “Summer’s Great Pulp Con.”
Our 2011 Munsey Award winner, ANTHONY TOLLIN, will be selling his SANCTUM BOOKS pulp reprints – The Avenger, The Black Bat, Doc Savage, Nick Carter, The Phantom Detective, The Shadow, The Skipper, The Spider and The Whisperer – nine of the greatest pulp heroes in one of the best formats imaginable. He’ll also have his special multi-packs featuring art prints, preliminary pulp cover art by Jerome and George Rozen, original Shadow comic book art, and other special materials available.
JOAB STIEGLITZ of Virginia is an avid tabletop role-playing game player and game master of the horror, espionage, fantasy, and science fiction genres. He is the author of Cthulhu-oriented pulp adventures and writes a blog at Rantings of a Wandering Mind ~ The Writing Blog of Joab Stieglitz. Joab will be selling copies of his highly regarded UTGARDA series at this year’s PulpFest. Please be sure to welcome him.
A pulp collector for about forty years, SHEILA VANDERBEEK is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She’ll be bringing pulp magazines from all genres for sale or trade. Of course, the more she sells, the more she’ll be able to buy from the many fine dealers who will be attending PulpFest 2018.
TODD WARREN is a pulp and comic book collector who attended Pulpfest for the first time in 2017. He liked it so much that he decided to come back this year as a dealer. An Overstreet advisor, Todd will be offering vintage pulps, paperbacks, books, a few comic books, and lots of pulp enthusiasm! Stop by his table and say, “Hi!”
JON WEHLER is a very personable dealer and collector who offers pulps, original art, and other paper collectibles. He’ll also have lots of vintage paperbacks from many different genres at PulpFest 2018. Based in Ohio, he exhibits at many book and paper shows throughout the Midwest. He often lends a hand during the PulpFest auctions. Did we mention that he’s a nice guy?
The editor of the long-lived Doc Savage fanzine, THE BRONZE GAZETTE, PulpFest technical director CHUCK WELCH will be offering copies of the “bigger, badder, and bronzer” Doc fanzine, published by Pulplications. He’ll also have a miscellany of pulp goodies. If you enjoy the adventures of Doc Savage and his “fearless five,” be sure to check out Chuck’s Hidalgo Trading Company on the Internet.
DAVID WHITE of suburban Chicago returns to PulpFest for his second straight year. He has been collecting for about forty years and selling since 2006, mostly through ebay as DAVE’S COMIC VAULT. At PulpFest 2018, David will have science-fiction pulps as well as some hero and horror magazines. He’ll also be selling fanzines, paperbacks, digests, and pulp reprints.
Author CHET WILLIAMSON is happy to return to PulpFest with his friend, Barry Traylor, the convention’s goodwill ambassador. In addition to his own books for sale at his table, Chet will have some nice condition, bedsheet BLUE BOOKS for sale, along with some rare Hammett magazine appearances. He’ll also have a large number of near mint pulp reprint paperbacks, as well as some miscellaneous stuff.

PulpFest 2018 begins on Thursday, July 26, and runs through Sunday, July 29 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. The convention will also be hosting a rare gallery showing of original art by acclaimed writer-illustrator Mark Wheatley. (For more than a decade, Anthony Tollin has been publishing THE SHADOW under the Sanctum Books banner. With issue #132 — featuring front cover art by George Rozen (originally created for the March 1, 1933 issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE) — to be released in time for PulpFest 2018, he comes that much closer to reprinting the entire run of the original pulp magazine. Its completion will be an amazing achievement, following his earlier reprinting of the entire runs of DOC SAVAGE and THE AVENGER.
Published by Howard Wright for twenty-five years, THE BRONZE GAZETTE helped to maintain interest in Doc Savage during the character’s “lean years,” when the character was, for the most part, a mere memory. After Wright’s final issue of the GAZETTE was published at the beginning of 2016, the magazine was continued by Terry Allen, Kez Wilson, and Chuck Welch, creator of the Hidalgo Trading Company and a member of the PulpFest organizing committee. Its latest issue — number 81 — features front cover art by Dan Brereton.
Beginning with its March 1942 issue, BLUE BOOK MAGAZINE devoted its monthly front cover — such as its September 1945 number, with cover art by Herbert Morton Stoops — to World War II. The final such cover was dated December 1945, depicting a returned serviceman greeted by well-wishers outside a church. In the bottom corner is a box that reads “Peace on Earth to Men of Good Will” and “Christmas 1945.” Chet Williamson will be selling some nice condition, bedsheet BLUE BOOKS at this year’s PulpFest.
