Visiting Pittsburgh

Although Mars — the Red Planet — is currently about 65 million miles away from Earth, Pennsylvania’s Mars is only 20 miles north of the exciting city of Pittsburgh. So if you’re thinking about attending PulpFest, why not bring your entire family?

One of the nation’s most livable cities, Pittsburgh is home to 90 neighborhoods and districts, making it a city to be explored one delightful section at a time. It’s very walkable with hip galleries, shops, dining, nightlife, sports, museums, and more throughout the city and the surrounding region.

While you’re enjoying yourself at PulpFest — the summertime destination for fans and collectors of all types of popular fiction, art, and related materials — your family can be taking in the many sites and sounds of this vibrant city. They’ll probably want to stick around for a few days more with their favorite pulp fan.

To the right of this post, you’ll find a box entitled “To Learn More.” Click the “Visit Pittsburgh” link at the bottom of the box to learn more about the city, home to cool museums, a fantastic food scene, and fun sports teams.

We look forward to seeing you and yours from August 7 – 10 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry — located in Mars, Pennsylvania — for PulpFest 2025 and our celebration of the “Masters of Blood and Thunder,” the “Great Pulp Villains,” the “Masters of Adventure, and more.

And don’t forget that your PulpFest membership also includes ERBFest 2024, Farmercon XX, and the return of Doc Con! That’s four conventions for the price of one!

You can book your room at the DoubleTree directly through the PulpFest website. Just click the “Book a Room” button at the top of our homepage or call 1-724-776-6900 or 855-610-8733. When calling, please be sure to mention PulpFest or use the code CDT91R to receive the convention rate.

Included in your room rate are complimentary hot breakfasts during each day of your stay. Free Wi-Fi and free parking are also included.

Conveniently located at the intersection of three major roadways, the DoubleTree boasts a fine restaurant in an open-air setting. There are many other restaurants nearby — some within walking distance — suitable for a variety of tastes. The more adventurous can discover plenty of dining, shopping, and nightlife just a short drive away in downtown Pittsburgh. The DoubleTree also offers a 24-hour fitness center, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and a sauna.

Now pull up a chair and relax. You’re welcome in Pittsburgh . . .

Our featured image — by Pittsburgh Beautiful — is a nighttime view of the city’s dynamic Downtown and Point State Park, taken from Mount Washington, overlooking the Monongahela River.

Our lead image is the December 1954 issue of Astounding Science Fiction, with cover art by Chesley Bonestell depicting Mars as seen from Phobos. An American pioneer of space art, Bonestell painted twelve covers for Astounding and nearly forty covers for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. His art helped to popularize manned space flight.

Norman Bean is an Edgar Rice Burroughs fan who joined the staff of volunteer writers for our website in August 2023. Given his affinity for ERB, Norm could not resist to lead off his post with something about Mars, the planet that Burroughs called Barsoom.
