PulpFest is a top venue for writers and publishers to roll out their newest titles. Following are some of the new books that will be featured at this summer’s pulp con.
Pick up your copy of Philip José Farmer’s Secrets of the Nine, collecting all three of the Science Fiction Grand Master’s “Nine” novels into a single omnibus edition at PulpFest 2024. Published by Meteor House with cover art by Douglas C. Klauba, this is the definitive collection of the adventures of Doc Caliban and Lord Grandrith!
Also new from Meteor House is Crossovers Expanded, Volume 3 — the fifth overall chronology of crossover tales in which characters, situations, or universes from a wide variety of fictional works are linked together — and The Lazarus Cabal — the fifth Meteor House chapbook. Both works are by Sean Lee Levin, who will be part of our Saturday afternoon panel, “Secrets, Crossovers, and the Full Account” on August 3 at PulpFest 2024.
Finally, you’ll also be able to purchase a copy of The Full Account, a one-of-a-kind edition wherein Around the World in Eighty Days, by Jules Verne, and The Other Log of Phileas Fogg, by Philip José Farmer, are woven together.
Sean Lee Levin will be signing all 100 copies of The Lazarus Cabal at PulpFest/FarmerCon in August. And be sure to join the Meteor House crew after hours in the hotel lounge to “Fraternize at FarmerCon,” at PulpFest 2024.
Charles F. Millhouse is an award-winning author who published his first book in 1999 and hasn’t looked back. He’ll be exhibiting at PulpFest for the first time. So technically, all of his books will be debuting at the convention. However, Charles wants to call special attention to his newest book. It will have its world premiere at PulpFest 2024. Although you’ll be able to pick up a copy at PulpFest, Captain Hawklin at War won’t have its worldwide release until 8/13/24.
When the Germans invade Paris and capture an ancient relic — the One True Cross of the crucifixion — they set in motion a chain of events that sends Steven Hawklin and his cohorts on a heart-pounding race against a malevolent SS officer, aided by their most cunning enemy, Maximillian Odenthal.
Meanwhile, on the sun-drenched battlegrounds of the Pacific, tramp steamer captain Zane Carrington fights valiantly to protect his crew amidst a relentless Japanese onslaught. Little does Zane know, his actions hold the key to unlocking the secrets that will guide Captain Hawklin to the True Cross.
The intertwining destinies of these two warriors unfold against a backdrop of war, weaving a tapestry of intrigue, danger, and unbreakable bonds. Will Steven Hawklin and his valiant friends defy the odds and rewrite the course of history? You’ll find out in Captain Hawklin at War — available only at PulpFest 2024.
Please welcome longtime freelancer Brian K. Morris to his first PulpFest. Brian hails from Indiana and will have copies of his many books available at PulpFest for the first time. The winner of The Pulp Factory Award for Best Short Story in 2022, Brian is also a comic book collector inspired by The Golden Age heroes of the past. He’ll have copies of The Original Skyman Battles the Master of Steam — which has been compared to Doc Savage — Vulcana: Rebirth of the Champion, and The Terrors — in which The Black Terror returns, but not as you know him! Visit Rising Tide Publications to learn more about this new PulpFest dealer and please welcome him to this year’s convention.
Lamont Award winner Ed Hulse of Murania Press will have the latest edition of Blood ‘n’ Thunder, the journal of adventure, mystery, and melodrama in American popular culture of the early 20th century. He’ll also have copies of his new book, The Art of the Classic Western Movie Poster — released in March by Schiffer — and the latest edition of his classic The Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction. It’s a book that no self-respecting pulp fan should be without. Ed will also be teaming up with pulp expert Walker Martin on Thursday evening, August 1, for “Black Mask: The Early Years,” part of our celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of legendary Black Mask editor, Joseph T. Shaw.
Will Murray, celebrated for his pulp-inspired fiction and knowledge of the pulp era, is back with another adventure of The Spider. When The Hangman — an accomplished assassin possessing weapons of unimaginable cruelty — arrives in America to kill Operator 5, the Spider swings into furious action to save the young undercover man. But will the Hangman slice him to ribbons — or lynch him for standing in his way? Find out what happens in The Hangman from Hell, the latest volume in The Wild Adventures of The Spider, published by Adventures in Bronze. And don’t forget to watch for Will’s fourth book in The Wild Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, also released in the last few months.
And don’t forget that Will Murray will be joining John Wooley on August 1, live on the PulpFest stage, for “Under Covers,” a look at the zany gumshoes that populated Spicy Detective Stories. It’s part of our celebration of the 90th anniversary of the “Spicy” pulps.
Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle are the co-editors of The Men’s Adventure Library book series, published by New Texture. Their series collects classic stories and artwork from the men’s adventure magazines, published from the 1950s through the 1970s. At PulpFest 2024, they’ll have copies of the new, color, expanded edition of Weasels Ripped My Flesh!, their classic anthology first published way back in 2012. Featuring stories by Lawrence Block, Harlan Ellison, Bruce Jay Friedman, Mario Puzo, Robert Silverberg, and others, it includes the story that Frank Zappa made famous by using it for an album title in 1970.
Additionally, our two men’s adventure experts will have a new, color, expanded edition of He-Men, Bag Men & Nymphos, a collection of high-intensity Walter Kaylin classics from pulp fiction purgatory, along with the jaw-dropping illustrations that accompanied their original magazine publication, plus reminiscences by Kaylin, his family, and his former editor, writer Bruce Jay Friedman.
Along with the two new editions, Bob and Wyatt will have copies of their backstock — including Atomic Werewolves and Man-Eating Plants — along with Men’s Adventure Quarterly, the magazine Bob publishes with Bill Cunningham of Pulp 2.0 Press.
World Fantasy Award winner Darrell Schweitzer has been publishing in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction fields since the early 1970s. He hopes to have copies of Speaking of the Fantastic V, a collection of “paleo-interviews,” or older, previously uncollected interviews with famous science fiction and fantasy writers, including Poul Anderson, Gregory Benford, C. J. Cherryh, Samuel R. Delany, Ron Goulart, Joe Haldeman, George R. R. Martin, Michael Moorcock, Larry Niven, Robert Sheckley, John Varley, Gene Wolfe, and others. He’ll also have copies of his two-volume retrospective, The Best of Darrell Schweitzer, and a great deal more.
Mark & Carol Wheatley will have copies of the award-winning artist’s four-volume, multi-media extravaganza Nucleus X, available at PulpFest 2024. Over two hundred pages of Mark’s art, comics, short stories, poetry, portfolios, and even over-size posters and art prints are topped off with his first music CD, inspired by his various comic and graphic novel creations of the past 40 years. Included are extensive portfolios of Mark’s works for Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs, as well as illustrated reviews of Robert Heinlein’s “Have Spacesuit – Will Travel” and Andre Norton’s “Star Rangers.” It all comes in a custom, illustrated box. The tenth issue of a fanzine that Mark began in 1969 and has been forty years in the making, it also features new stories in the popular Frankenstein Mobster, Mars, Prince Nightmare, Radical Dreamer, and other series.
Mark and Carol will also be offering large, art-sized museum quality giclee art prints of the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, as well as the authorized print of his theatrical poster design for Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon.
MarQuese Liddle, author and editor at Wild Isle Literature, makes his debut appearance at PulpFest in 2024. He’ll be offering copies of his Wand Smoke series of weird fantasy novels and novellas, including his recent Wand Smoke: Tales from the Labyrinth — The Tears of Winter. It’s the tale of a poet who falls in love with the queen of the fairies and decides to leave the safety of his home to bring her a poem he’s written. His journey is perilous, pitting him against religious fanatics, savages, faeries, hobgoblins, trolls, hags, ghosts, and demons as yet unseen in his world. For fans of folklore, fairytales, RPGs, weird pulp stories, and cult classics — as if H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Cormac McCarthy, and Mark Twain wrote and played a tabletop campaign together.
