Pulp magazines have influenced writers, artists, film directors, software developers, and countless others. Artist and illustrator Douglas C. Klauba has depicted many of the great popular heroes of the 20th Century, including a host of pulp magazine titans. An admirer of the work of pulp artists Walter Baumhofer, Virgil Finlay, Hubert Rogers, and George Rozen, Klauba declares himself a fan of the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, as well as a pulp enthusiast.
A Chicago native, Doug graduated from the American Academy of Art in Chicago in 1985. He also studied at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. His illustrations have been commissioned for posters, advertising, book covers, magazines, corporate communications, calendars, and collector plates by various national and international agencies and design firms.
We hope you’ll join award-winning novelist, journalist, and editor Craig McDonald live from the PulpFest 2024 presentation stage at 2:30 pm on Saturday, August 3, for “Burroughs, Farmer, & Pulp,” an interview with artist Douglas C. Klauba concerning his life and art. Not surprisingly, Doug’s cover art will be featured on three books premiering during the summer of 2024 depicting the three themes of our talk — “Burroughs, Farmer, and Pulp.” You’ll probably see all three books at PulpFest 2024.
Author of the Edgar-nominated Hector Lassiter historical crime series, Craig McDonald is a member of the PulpFest organizing committee and a regular contributor to The Pulpster and our website. He’s also the creator of most of the video content that you’ll find on the PulpFest YouTube Channel. An award-winning novelist, journalist, and editor, Craig’s Hector Lassiter series chronicles the exploits of a fictional Black Mask author and his encounters with such notable figures as Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, Ian Fleming, and Lester Dent. He’s now moved on to The Adventures of Zana O’Savin, a series inspired by some of the great pulp heroes. Craig hopes to have the third and latest Zana O’Savin novel — complete with cover art by Douglas C. Klauba — at this year’s PulpFest.
PulpFest 2024 begins on August 1 and runs through August 4 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. We’ll be celebrating “Spice, Spies, Shaw, and More” at this year’s convention.
