PulpFest

Last Call for Auction Lots

Do you have a book or pulp collection that you would like to sell? Wouldn’t it be nice to see your collection stay with people who appreciate what you or your departed loved one enjoyed? Why not have PulpFest sell it through our annual auction?

We’re currently cataloging and photographing a large collection of science fiction hardcovers, paperbacks, reference books, and art books related to the genre. We envision about 200 lots that will feature about 2000 books in various conditions.

The collection belonged to Charles Danowski, a devoted family man and educator who passed away on August 2, 2023. A former superintendent of schools in Irvington and North Salem, New York, and a professor at SUNY New Paltz, Danowski was known for his infectious sense of humor, incredible compassion, and love of science fiction.

In addition to the Danowski collection, we’ve received submissions from several PulpFest members interested in selling select items from their collections.

PulpFest welcomes large and small collections, from a single item to thousands of books, pulps, comics, fanzines, and related collectibles. If you’re ready to sell, give our auction service a try.

Although we will accept any submissions up through the day of the 2024 PulpFest auction, you are encouraged to submit your lots before the start of the convention. This will allow PulpFest to list your lots — including your submitted photographs — on our online auction page. They will then be advertised to PulpFest members and the public through our website. Online bids will be accepted for all lots submitted before the start of PulpFest 2024.

We expect to have our PulpFest 2024 Auction Page and Silent Auction Bid Page up and running on our website by the end of May, two full months before the start of this year’s convention.

The convention will charge a 16% commission based on the selling price for anything sold. For example, if an item sells for $100, the seller will receive $84.

Please write to PulpFest auction coordinator, Mike Chomko, at mike@pulpfest.com or 2217 W. Fairview Street, Allentown, PA 18104 if you have any questions about placing material into the next PulpFest auction. The PulpFest 2024 auction is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

Our featured image is adapted from H. J. Ward’s cover for the August 1940 issue of Spicy Adventure Stories, illustrating Robert Leslie Bellem’s “Loot for the Lords of Doom.” Our lead image is Jim Warren’s dust jacket art for Dinosaur Fantastic, an anthology edited by Martin H. Greenberg and Mike Resnick that is one of the many books included in the Danowski Collection of Science Fiction. The dust jacket art is by award-winning artist Jim Warren. Our final image is Randall Garrett’s Takeoff!, a collection of pastiches by the author, with cover art by Frank Kelly Freas. A copy of the collection — along with its sequel, Takeoff Too! — will be in this year’s PulpFest auction.

PulpFest 2024 will celebrate the “Spicy” pulps, dinosaurs, and more at this year’s gathering. We hope you’ll join us August 1 – 4 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania for “Spice, Spies, Shaw, and More.”
