PulpFest

Highlights from The Pulpster #32

The Pulpster celebrates several notable anniversaries in 2023. It’s been 100 years since Street & Smith Publications kicked off the sports-pulp genre with Sport Story Magazine and since Weird Tales was unleashed on the world.

And, who can forget the wave of hero pulps that burst upon the scene 90 years ago, in 1933?

We’ve got some terrific articles by contributors such as Will Murray, Michelle Nolan, Tony Davis, Darrell Schweitzer, and others lined up on each of those anniversaries.

And, Mike Chomko is back with the second installment of the history of Fiction House — “The Home for Action.” He started the story last year on the publisher’s 100th anniversary. He’ll wrap it up in next year’s number.

In connection with ERBfest 2023, we’ll devote space to articles on Edgar Rice Burroughs and his work.

We’ll also have interviews with writer Frank Belknap Long and T. T. Scott, the former president of Fiction House. The latter was conducted by Roger Hill.

Plus, we’ll take a look at Alfred Hitchcock’s TV adaptation of a Cornell Woolrich story and consider several odes to the pulp magazines.

Of course, we’ll remember those in pulpdom whom we’ve lost in the past year in Tony Davis’ latest installment of “Final Chapters.”

At 80 pages plus covers, it’s our longest issue yet!

A longstanding tradition cherished by attendees of summer pulp cons, The Pulpster #32 will be released at PulpFest 2023. Every member of PulpFest — including supporting members — will receive a complimentary copy of The Pulpster. It should be available for order on the Pulpster website a bit after that, along with select booksellers.

PulpFest 2023 begins on Thursday, August 3, and runs through Sunday, August 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. We’ll be celebrating “Chilling Sports,” “Pulp Heroes,” and a great deal more — including  FarmerCon XVIII — at the convention.

You can learn how to join PulpFest 2023 by clicking the registration button found on our website. As FarmerCon XVIII and ERBFest 2023 are both part of PulpFest, there is no extra cost to attend FarmerCon or ERBFest. That’s 3 conventions for the price of one.

The cover art for The Pulpster #32 was adapted by William Lampkin from Modest Stein’s cover for the March 1939 issue, first number, of Street & Smith’s Sport Story MagazineIn addition to editing and designing The Pulpster, Bill Lampkin runs ThePulp.Net and also writes the Yellowed Perils blog. He’s also the founder of the Facebook group Southern Pulpsters. A member of the PulpFest organizing committee, serving as the convention’s advertising director and webmaster, Bill won the Munsey Award in 2018.

Following the convention, a limited number of copies of our program book will be available for purchase through Mike Chomko, Books.
