PulpFest

Starting Today — 3 Posts a Week

Since late August 2022, we’ve had an announcement about PulpFest once a week. Starting today, we’ll be releasing a post every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We’ll maintain that pace until early July. After that, we’ll have 5 posts a week — Monday through Friday — until the conclusion of PulpFest 2023 on August 6.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll preview summer’s convention scene and visit with Chuck Welch, the editor of The Bronze Gazette. Join Craig McDonald for our latest “PulpFest Profile.” We’ll also discuss buying and selling at this year’s PulpFest and what Pittsburgh has to offer to visitors.

Later this month, we’ll start our programming posts, exploring this year’s programming schedule. We’ll be celebrating the centennials of Weird Tales and Sport Story Magazine and saluting some of the great pulp heroes, including Robert E. Howard’s Conan, Lester Dent’s Doc Savage, and Popular Publications’ Spider. It’s “Chilling Sports and Pulp Heroes,” only at PulpFest 2023.

But don’t forget that at PulpFest you’ll be enjoying three conventions for the price of one. Joining us will be FarmerCon XVIII, celebrating the life and times of Philip José Farmer, and ErbFest 2023, saluting the centennials of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. and the author’s “Moon Trilogy,” as well as the 150th anniversary of artist J. Allen St. John’s birth. Henry G. Franke III — the editor of The Burroughs Bulletin — will be hosting an art show too. It’s all part of our second annual celebration of the Master of Adventure, ERBFest 2023.

PulpFest 2023 will take place August 3 – 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. You can register for the convention by clicking our “registration” button at the top of the page to be part of “Summer’s Amazing Pulp Con.”

To reserve a room at the DoubleTree, click the “Book a Room” button or call 1.866.568.0896. Be sure to mention PulpFest to get the special convention rate. By staying at the DoubleTree, you’ll help to ensure the convention’s success. We urge every member to book a hotel room for PulpFest 2023 as soon as possible.

Our Chilling Sports image was adapted by William Lampkin from The Phantom Detective for January 1934, with cover by Rafael M. DeSoto, and Thrilling Sports for Winter 1947, with cover by Rudolph Belarski. Additional artwork is by Mark Wheatley.

Derek Starr is a writer and popular culture enthusiast who began contributing to our website in 2022. He particularly enjoys the Fiction House pulps — including their three pigskin pulps — as well as the game of football. He most recently wrote about PulpFest sponsorship opportunities, as well as the 1942 issue of Sport Story Annual.
