PulpFest

More from the Carl Joecks Estate

On August 5, PulpFest will be offering 75 auction lots of first-edition science fiction hardcovers and reference books, Armed Services Edition paperbacks, juvenile series books, convention program books, fanzines, and other material from the collection of the late Carl Joecks.

A retired television cameraman, electronic equipment repairman, and carpenter from Vermont, Carl Joecks became enamored with science fiction, comic books, radio, and astronomy as a boy. He was soon collecting the things that he loved.

If you click the auction tab on the PulpFest homepage, you’ll be linked to our auction page, featuring a photographic catalog of all 75 lots from the Joecks estate. You’ll also find a link to a six-page PDF catalog with additional details about the material.

One of the highlights of the 2023 Joeck’s auction will be Jules Verne’s “Wrecked in the Air.” The edition is the first U. S. authorized edition of the opening segment of Mysterious Island. Published in 1874 by Scribner, Armstrong, & Co., it features 48 illustrations and a map. The edition is bound in brown cloth with the front panel stamped in gold. Although the book is dated 1875 on the title page, it was issued in late October 1874, according to science fiction authority L. W. Currey.

A fine copy of the first edition of Robert A. Heinlein’s Assignment in Eternity will also be part of the auction. It is just one of the many first-edition science fiction classics being offered from the collection of the late Carl Joecks in our 2023 estate auction.

For fans of Doc Savage and the other great pulp heroes that we’ll be celebrating at this year’s PulpFest, we’ll be offering six early Sanctum Books Doc Savage Doubles as part of the estate auction. There’s also a copy of the second volume of The Steranko History of Comics and more.

The Carl Joecks Estate Auction will be held in the PulpFest 2023 programming room at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. All attendees of PulpFest 2023 will be able to bid on the available material. People who desire to attend the PulpFest auction — but not the convention itself — will also be welcome to the Joecks Estate Auction. Additional details can be found by clicking the auction tab at the top of the PulpFest homepage.

For those who cannot make it to Mars for PulpFest 2023, we’ve set up a Silent Auction Bid Page. You’ll find additional details by clicking the auction tab on the PulpFest homepage. We’ll have more details about the auction in the coming months. Be sure to bookmark pulpfest.com.

We do hope that you’ll be able to make it to Mars, Pennsylvania and join in the bidding on the Joecks Estate. The auction will begin at 9 pm on Saturday, August 5.

Start making your plans to attend PulpFest 2023 and join hundreds of genre fiction and art fans at the pop-culture center of the universe. We’ll see you August 3 – 6 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry, just nineteen miles north of Pittsburgh.

If you still need a hotel room, you can book one directly through the PulpFest website. Just click the “Book a Room” link on our homepage or call 1-800-222-8733. Be sure to mention PulpFest in order to receive the convention rate. You must book your room before 12 AM on Wednesday, July 12 to receive your discount.

Assignment in Eternity was first published by Fantasy Press in 1953, with dust jacket art by Ric Binkley, an artist who painted the initial cover art for many books now regarded as science fiction classics. The first edition of Assignment in Eternity can be found in lot #23 of our estate auction.

Our featured image has been adapted from the 2007 edition of Doc Savage, Volume 12, published in 2007 by Sanctum Books. The cover art by Emery Clarke was originally used as the front cover for the August 1940 issue of Doc Savage, published by Street & Smith.

PulpFest will be saluting Doc Savage and other pulp heroes at this year’s convention. To learn more about the convention’s programming, click here.
