PulpFest

Starting Today — 3 Posts a Week

Since late August, we’ve had an announcement about PulpFest once a week. Starting today, we’ll release a post every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We’ll maintain that pace until the beginning of July. After that, we’ll have one post every Monday through Friday until the conclusion of PulpFest 50.

In the weeks to come, we will preview the conventions coming up in June and visit with artist Mark Wheatley for our latest “PulpFest Profile.” Professional journalist and illustrator Sara Light-Waller will explore Brother Can You Spare a Dime, one of the biggest hits of 1932. Toward the end of the month, award-winning novelist, journalist, and editor Craig McDonald will answer the question, “Why PulpFest?” We’ll also have news about this year’s estate auction and buying and selling at PulpFest 50.

Throughout June and the first half of July, we’ll explore our programming schedule for this year’s PulpFest. The convention will celebrate “A Half-Century of Pulp Cons” and salute the centennial of pulp magazine and comic book publisher Fiction House, as well as the ninetieth anniversary of Popular Publications’ “Dime” line of pulp magazines.

Other highlights of our 2022 programming will include presentations on artists Nick Eggenhoffer and George Gross, and a panel concerning the popular Doc Savage fanzine, The Savage Society of Bronze. We’ll also be joined by FarmerCon XVII, celebrating the life and times of Philip José Farmer, longtime pulp fan and Grand Master of Science Fiction.

PulpFest 50 will take place August 4 – 7 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. We hope you’ll join us for our celebration of “A Half-Century of Pulp Cons” and “Action for a Dime!” You can register for PulpFest 50  by clicking our “registration” button at the top of the page to be part of “Summer’s Amazing Pulp Con.”

To reserve a room at the DoubleTree, click the “Book a Room” button or call 1.866.568.0896. Be sure to mention PulpFest to get the special convention rate. By staying at the DoubleTree, you’ll help to ensure the convention’s success. We urge every member to book a hotel room for PulpFest 50 as soon as possible.

Rafael DeSoto’s cover art for the November 1945 Dime Mystery Magazine is our featured image. Pulp scholars Ed Hulse and Garyn Roberts will be discussing the Popular Publications pulp on Thursday evening, August 4, at PulpFest 50.

Our postcard image has been adapted by PulpFest advertising director William Lampkin from George Gross’s cover for the Fall 1946 issue of the Fiction House air pulp, Wings.

George Gross was the leading cover artist for Fiction House, painting dozens of covers for Action Stories, Air Stories, Baseball Stories, Detective Book Magazine, Fight Stories, Football Stories, Jungle Stories, North•West Romances, Wings, and other titles. According to pulp scholar David Saunders, he also sold cover art to A. A. Wyn’s Periodical House. In later years, Gross painted covers for men’s adventure magazines and paperback books.

On Friday evening, August 5, join PulpFest 50 for a presentation on George Gross by Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle. It’s just one of many fine presentations planned for this year’s PulpFest. Please click the “Programming” button on our website for a preview of PulpFest’s programming schedule for 2022.
