Today, the PulpFest organizing committee wishes everyone a very happy Thanksgiving. Our featured image is from 1937 and has a lighthearted feel, typical of Snappy’s pin-up covers. Wherever you are in the world this year, we sincerely hope you’re able to join in a good meal with friends and family this Thanksgiving.
In the coming months, PulpFest will bring you many fresh stories about the history of the pulps, contemporary creators, upcoming conventions, and information about PulpFest 50. Fifty years of pulp cons! Can you believe it? We’re very excited about our next convention and think you’ll be, too!
PulpFest 50 begins on Thursday, August 4, and runs through Sunday, August 7. Please join us at the beautiful DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. We look forward to seeing you in August 2022 for PulpFest 50 and “Action for a Dime! It’s our salute to the 100th anniversary of pulp and comic book publisher, Fiction House, as well as the 90th anniversary of Popular Publications’ “Dime” pulps.
Featured in our post is Earle K. Bergey’s cover for the November 1937 Snappy. Born in Philadelphia on August 26, 1901, Bergey apprenticed himself to professional, teaching illustrators before completing formal studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. While producing commercial art for numerous periodicals and newspapers, Earle began to contribute cover art to Brief Stories and Paris Nights, as early as 1926. By decade’s end, he was selling regularly to the Fiction House pulps, painting covers for their adventure, aviation, boxing, detective, romance, and western lines. He later became one of the leading artists for Ned Pines’ Standard Magazines.
