PulpFest is not only lauded for its excellent programming but also its very substantial dealers’ room.
Beginning on Thursday, August 19, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry will be home to thousands of collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and much more.
What dealers are we expecting at PulpFest 2021? For the next five days, we’ll be profiling our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them so you get to know them . . .
Collecting since the early days of pulp fandom, legend has it that WALKER MARTIN has owned practically every pulp at least once! A resident of New Jersey, he’ll be selling a variety of pulp magazines, DVDs, original artwork, and one-of-a-kind canceled checks from the files of Munsey and Popular Publications. Walker contributes a regular column on pulp collecting to Steve Lewis’ Mystery*File blog.
DRAKE MAYNARD has been collecting science fiction and mystery books, magazines, and related materials since the 1970s. He’ll be bringing a large selection of paperbacks with Robert McGinnis covers, a collection of Leslie Charteris’ The Saint in paperback, and other vintage paperbacks from the 1940s through the 60s. He’ll also have first edition hardcovers from publishers such as Gnome Press and Avalon Books, as well as other items that may be of interest to PulpFest attendees.
The assisting marketing director for PulpFest, WILLIAM PATRICK MAYNARD, is also the author of the first authorized Fu Manchu thrillers in over thirty years. He will be signing and selling copies of his books — including the new Flinch Books anthology, OCCUPIED PULP. Bill will also have a selection of material from his own collection to sell. In addition to manning a table in our dealers’ room, Bill will be hosting our New Fictioneers readings, performing an author reading on Saturday afternoon, and interviewing author Will Murray and artist Joe DeVito. He’ll be busy!
ED HULSE of MURANIA PRESS is the editor and publisher of the much-admired journal, BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER, and many other publications. He’ll have a brand new issue at PulpFest 2021, the first in two years. He’ll also have copies of low-budget film producer Sam Sherman’s memoir WHEN DRACULA MET FRANKENSTEIN. And don’t forget about the panel that Ed will be moderating on Saturday evening, August 21: “Walter B. Gibson and His Shadows.” Appearing with Ed will be author Will Murray, artist James Steranko, and publisher Anthony Tollin.
The author of over sixty novels and assorted books, WILL MURRAY will be selling copies from his various “The All-New Wild Adventures of . . .” series including DOC SAVAGE: MR. CALAMITY, THE SPIDER: FURY IN STEEL, and THE WILD ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES. Expect to see some of Will’s non-fiction books, as well. Of course, he’ll be glad to sign your purchases. Will publishes his books under the ADVENTURES IN BRONZE banner, in association with Altus Press. On Saturday afternoon, August 21, be sure to catch William Patrick Maynard’s interview with Will Murray.
PHIL NELSON is from Waverly, Ohio. He will be bringing an assortment of pulp magazines and new-condition Girasol Collectables pulp replicas. This very personable dealer will also have vintage paperbacks, comic books, and other collectibles. He’s a fan of NORTH-WEST STORIES and detective fiction.
One of our very first supporters when PulpFest came to Mars, Pennsylvania was TODD McDEVITT of NEW DIMENSION COMICS. Owned by Todd since 1986, New Dimension Comics has six stores in the Pittsburgh region, including one just 2.5 miles away from Pulpfest. Please visit the store while you are in town. It’s at 20550 Route 19, Cranberry Township, PA 16066. Todd will be bringing some of his dealer buddies to the convention, offering our members some vintage treats for the first time. They’ll have plenty of room . . . Todd has taken seven island tables.
BOB DEIS and WYATT DOYLE are the co-editors of THE MEN’S ADVENTURE LIBRARY book series, published by NEW TEXTURE. It collects classic stories and artwork from men’s adventure magazines that were published in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. They’ll be selling copies of their books along with the great new magazine, MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY, that Bob publishes with Bill Cunningham of Pulp 2.0 Press. New to his tables this year: over 200 issues of WEIRD TALES, hundreds of science fiction pulps, a full line of Advent Publishing books at reduced prices, about 300 high-quality vintage paperbacks, a fresh stock of vintage hardbacks from Gnome Press, Fantasy Press, Shasta, and other small presses, and some surprises. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the late Samson Pollen created top-notch illustration artwork for various types of periodicals and paperback books, as well as fine art paintings for galleries and commissions. However, most of his artwork — literally hundreds of paintings — was used as interior illustrations for stories in the Atlas/Diamond group of men’s adventure magazines published by Martin Goodman’s Magazine Management Company. PulpFest 2021 is very pleased to announce that the artist’s widow, JACQUELINE POLLEN, will be exhibiting a number of her late husband’s illustrations in our dealers’ room.
A resident of Virginia, CRAIG POOLE has been attending pulp conventions for many years. He’ll be exhibiting a limited number of high-end illustrations on Saturday, August 21, for one day only. Craig will have a mix of genres, but science fiction will be the primary focus.
Please welcome audio artist MARK REDFIELD of REDFIELD ARTS AUDIO to this year’s PulpFest. Mark is an actor, writer, artist, filmmaker, and magazine editor and publisher. Mark will have CDs of his recent audiobooks including Mark Wheatley’s SONGS OF GIANTS: THE POETRY OF PULP, SINBAD AND THE PIRATE PRINCESS — starring Caroline Munro and Martine Beswicke — and other great audio dramas. He’ll also have hardcover copies of CULT OF THE NOSFERATU. It’s the first book in a hardboiled horror series called VAMPIRE HUNTERS INCORPORATED that Mark co-created with Stuart Voytilla. Composer and sound designer JENNIFER ROUSE will also be appearing at PulpFest 2021. Many thanks to Redfield Audio Arts for their very generous support of PulpFest.
