PulpFest

Debuting at PulpFest 2021 — Part Two

PulpFest is a top venue for writers and publishers to roll out their newest titles. Following are some of the new books that will be featured at our 2021 convention . . .

Jan Koenig has always loved books and reading. Her favorites evolved from ancient mythology to fantasy to science fiction, not only in books but television and movies as well. Her writing seemed to be a natural outgrowth of this progression. Jan will be selling copies of her science fiction novel THE FATE OF THE ANDROMEDA III. It has been compared to the Murray Leinster classic, “First Contact.” We’d like to welcome Jan to her first PulpFest.

Craig McDonald’s final entry in his internationally popular Hector Lassiter series, WRITE FROM WRONG, will debut at PulpFest 2021. In it, Lassiter, a BLACK MASK magazine writer known for “living what he writes, and writing what he lives,” will brush shoulders with Walter B. Gibson (The Shadow), Lester Dent (Doc Savage), Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Orson Welles, and others.

Craig is an award-winning novelist, journalist, and editor. His Lassiter novel, HEAD GAMES, was selected as a 2008 Edgar Award nominee for Best First Novel by an American Author. It was also a finalist for the Anthony, Gumshoe, and CRIMESPREE MAGAZINE awards for best first novel.

The assistant marketing director and afternoon programming director for PulpFest, William Patrick Maynard is also the author of the first authorized Fu Manchu thrillers in over thirty years. He will be signing and selling copies of his books, including the new Flinch Books anthology, OCCUPIED PULP. Edited by Jim Beard and John C. Bruening, OCCUPIED PULP is an anthology of six stories set in the years following the Second World War. Of course, Bill will have copies of his other books, including THE TERROR OF FU MANCHU and THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU.

Ed Hulse, editor of BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER and publisher at Murania Press, will have a new issue of his much-admired and award-winning journal at PulpFest 2021. Ed will also have copies of low-budget film producer Sam Sherman’s memoir WHEN DRACULA MET FRANKENSTEIN and other books at his dealer’s table. And don’t forget, scheduled for release by IDW at the end of September will be Ed’s THE ART OF PULP FICTION: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF VINTAGE PAPERBACKS.

The author of over sixty novels and assorted works, Will Murray is hoping to debut MASTER OF MYSTERY: THE RISE OF THE SHADOW, a collection of articles and interviews pertaining to the Street & Smith pulp hero. It will feature cover art by the talented Joe DeVito. Will also will have copies from his various “The All-New Wild Adventures of . . .” series, including Doc Savage, Sherlock Holmes, The Spider, and Tarzan.

Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle — the co-editors of THE MEN’S ADVENTURE LIBRARY series — will have copies of all of their latest books: MANEATERS: KILLER SHARKS IN MEN’S ADVENTURE MAGAZINES, EXOTIC ADVENTURES OF ROBERT SILVERBERG, ONE MAN ARMY: THE ACTION PAPERBACK ART OF GIL COHEN, and MORT KÜNSTLER: THE GODFATHER OF PULP FICTION ILLUSTRATORS. Published by New Texture, they’ll have these and much more, including the first two issues of the great new magazine, MEN’S ADVENTURE QUARTERLY, that Bob publishes with Bill Cunningham of Pulp 2.0 Press. For more information, please visit Bob’s Men’s Adventure Magazines blog at MensPulpMags.com.

Please welcome back audio artist Mark Redfield of Redfield Arts Studio to this year’s PulpFest. Mark is an actor, writer, artist, filmmaker, and magazine editor and publisher. He will have CDs of his recent audiobooks, including Mark Wheatley’s SONGS OF GIANTS: THE POETRY OF PULPSINBAD AND THE PIRATE PRINCESS — starring Caroline Munro and Martine Beswicke — and other great audio dramas. He’ll also have hardcover copies of CULT OF THE NOSFERATU. It’s the first book in a hardboiled horror series called VAMPIRE HUNTERS INCORPORATED that Mark co-created with Stuart Voytilla.  Composer and sound designer Jennifer Rouse will also be at the Redfield Arts Studio tables.

World Fantasy Award winner Darrell Schweitzer has been publishing in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction fields since the early 1970s. He will be selling copies of his two-volume retrospective, THE BEST OF DARRELL SCHWEITZERAWAITING STRANGE GODS — his Lovecraftian fiction collection — THE ROBERT E. HOWARD READERTHE INNSMOUTH TABERNACLE CHOIR HYMNAL, and anthologies that he has edited, including THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS REVEALED. He’ll also have copies of the newest issues of BLACK STATIC, INTERZONE, and WEIRDBOOK.

This year at PulpFest, Don Simpson debuts the 2021 Fantagraphics reprint of the 1987 graphic novelette classic IN PICTOPIA, scripted by the same writer who took his name off DC’s WATCHMENV FOR VENDETTATHE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN . . . and, naturally, took his name off this edition! A pre-ROGER RABBIT dystopian allegory, IN PICTOPIA depicts a ghetto of vintage comic book, comic strip, and animation characters taken over by a ruthless corporation bent on converting every nostalgic fantasy into a slick superhero property.

Inducted into The Overstreet Hall of Fame in July 2017, Mark Wheatley is a long-time Edgar Rice Burroughs fan and admirer of the work of Philip José Farmer. He has also painted covers for Norvell W. Page’s THE SPIDER: SATAN’S MURDER MACHINES and AMAZON NIGHTS, by Arthur O. Friel. In collaboration with G. D. Falksen, Mark created the book DOCTOR CTHULITTLEHow’s that for some top-notch pulp credentials?

At PulpFest 2021, Mark and his wife, Carol, will have copies of the signed, limited edition of SONGS OF GIANTS: THE POETRY OF PULP. In it, you’ll discover all the romance, the secret fears, and the surprising cosmos found in poems written by Robert E. Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and H. P. Lovecraft. Mark has brought these poems to life with a fine line illustration style inspired by the early, classic, golden age illustrators. Each poem has been lovingly illustrated, capturing the essence of the words set down by these three giants of the pulps.

Award-winning author Chet Williamson is happy to return to PulpFest. Chet was our guest of honor at PulpFest 2015. He’ll have copies of MURDER OLD AND NEW, a dark mystery that he wrote with his wife, Laurie. The story concerns a nostalgia shop owner solving very old (and new) murders that are seemingly connected. Joe Lansdale has suggested that the Williamsons’ novel is “so riveting and swiftly paced you almost hate to arrive at the solution because you hate to lose the narrator’s voice.” And even more importantly, pulp magazines are mentioned! Of course, Chet will be happy to sign any of his books for you.

John Wooley has written, co-written, or edited nearly fifty books. One of his latest is THE CLEANSING trilogy, a series largely set in 1930s Arkansas that Wooley co-wrote with his friend, Robert A. Brown. Published by Babylon Books, Wooley’s and Brown’s trilogy “will bear mentioning in the same breath with Lovecraft and Robert Bloch and Robert E. Howard.” Signed copies of all three books in the trilogy — SEVENTH SENSE, SATAN’S SWINE, and SINISTER SERPENT — will be available at the convention. Watch for them at John McMahan’s tables.

Some of the creators listed above will be part of our “New Fictioneers Readings” on Friday and Saturday, while others will be participating in panels and presentations.
