PulpFest

It Will Be Windy in September

The Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention commemorates twenty years of pulp con excellence as it returns to the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center from September 10 to 12 this year. The convention doors open at 11 AM on Friday, but early-bird shoppers can get in one hour early starting at 10 AM. The convention runs until 4 PM on Sunday.

This year’s show marks the centennial of BLACK MASK, the pulp that came to define the hardboiled detective and crime story genre, as well as the 90th anniversary of ASTOUNDING, Street & Smith’s pulp predecessor to today’s ANALOG SCIENCE FICTION AND FACT digest.

Additionally, there’s the annual Windy City Film Festival, organized and emceed by the one and only Ed Hulse of Murania Press. The Friday and Saturday night auctions will feature material from the Robert Weinberg Estate and the Glenn Lord Estate. An art show and New Pulp Sunday are also on their schedule.

You don’t have to wait until September to discover pulp treasures. Windy City 20  follows PulpFest 2021 and its salute to “Love in the Shadows.” And thanks to the efforts of Henry G. Franke III, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., and the PulpFest organizing committee, there will be a Summer 2021 convention for the fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his work. PulpFest 2021 will also be the site for ERBFest 2021.

PulpFest and ERBFest 2021 will begin Thursday evening, August 19, and run through Sunday afternoon, August 22. They will take place just outside of Pittsburgh at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. It’s easy to register, just click the Registration button at the top of this page. Advance registrations end on Sunday, August 15.

This year’s Windy celebrates the centennial of BLACK MASK and the 90th anniversary of ASTOUNDING STORIES, both postponed for a year by the coronavirus. To celebrate, the convention shared this Hubert Rogers painting, originally created as the cover art for the November 1940 ASTOUNDING SCIENCE-FICTION,  illustrating the novella, “Salvage,” written by Vic Phillips.

Please watch the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention homepage or Facebook site to keep abreast of the latest developments. And please get the COVID-19 vaccine. Like PulpFest, Windy City has many older members who attend. Please keep them in mind. Remember, we’re all in this together. United We Stand!

As of August 30, Illinois instituted a mask mandate for all indoor gatherings. Accordingly, all convention attendees over the age of two, whether or not they have been vaccinated, will be required to be masked while in the convention space in the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center.

Please remember, if you are exhibiting any symptoms associated with COVID-19, please stay at home. You should not attend PulpFest or Windy City. Isolate and avoid contact with others, rest, and drink fluids. If your symptoms worsen, call your health care provider.
