PulpFest is a top venue for writers and publishers to roll out their newest titles. Following are some of the new books that will be featured at our 2021 convention . . .
In addition to being one of the world’s largest pulp dealers, Adventure House is a very active publisher of pulp reprints and pulp replicas. John and Maureen Gunnison will not only have a wide selection of vintage pulp magazines, they’ll also have recent issues of HIGH ADVENTURE and various titles in their pulp replica line, including SPICY ADVENTURE, SPICY DETECTIVE, SPICY MYSTERY, ORIENTAL STORIES, STRANGE STORIES, and others.
Age of Aces Books is a publisher of pulp fiction treasures with a keen eye for design. At this year’s PulpFest, Chris and David Kalb will be releasing two thrilling collections from the tattered pages of the air war pulps: Donald E. Keyhoe’s CAPTAIN PHILIP STRANGE: STRANGE RIVALS — their ninth collection featuring “The Phantom Ace of G-2” — and THE BLACK FALCON — a collection of six Arthur J. Burks stories from Standard Magazine’s SKY FIGHTERS.
Airship 27 writers Fred Adams Jr. and Wayne Carey will be sharing a dealer’s table at PulpFest 2021. Fred will be selling copies of his various series, including THE DEAD SHERIFF and C. O. JONES. He’ll also have his stand-alone novel, FANGS OF THE SEA, and more at the convention. His tablemate, Wayne Carey, will be offering his work from Airship’s QUATERMAIN: THE NEW ADVENTURES series, as well as his stand-alone novels, COMPANY OF SHADOWS and EXECUTIVE GAMBIT, and other works.
Writer, poet, and zombie wrangler Matt Betts will have copies of CARSON OF VENUS: THE EDGE OF ALL WORLDS, a continuation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Venus series, as well as seven other novels and two collections of science fiction poetry.
Bold Venture Press is a heroic little publishing company, specializing in quality editions of new and classic pulp fiction. Their publications span many genres — mystery, science fiction, horror, western, romance, and humor. We’re pleased to welcome back Audrey Parente and Rich Harvey back to PulpFest. They’ll have copies of the latest issue of PULP ADVENTURES, more Zorro novels — including THE PROMISE OF ZORRO, the story of Don Diego de la Vega’s path to becoming the daring, masked swashbuckler — the latest volume in E. Jefferson Clay’s popular BENEDICT AND BRAZOS series, and other titles.
Please welcome indie writer Ron Chandler to his first PulpFest. He’ll be selling two suspenseful books at this year’s PulpFest. NEPTUNE’S GARDEN AND OTHER ADVENTURES is a collection of twelve outdoor adventures, including a murder mystery set on a research facility at the bottom of the Atlantic. GHOST RIDERS OF CUMBERLAND GAP is a novel about a Virginia teenager who becomes an action-adventure hero after crossing through a time portal. Ron comes to us from the state of Maryland.
PulpFest marketing and programming director Mike Chomko will be exhibiting six new volumes in Steeger Books’ BLACK MASK LIBRARY. He’ll also be selling the next installment from H. Bedford-Jones’ John Solomon series, featuring two rare novels by “The King of the Pulps.” Thanks to a special arrangement with Steeger Books publisher Matt Moring, Mike will have both hardbound and softcover copies on hand for PulpFest 2021.
Mike Chomko, Books — one of the leading purveyors of pulp reprint books and periodicals since the 1990s — will also be representing Stark House Press at this year’s PulpFest. The publisher is planning several new titles for the convention, including Arnold Hano’s noir westerns, SLADE & MANHUNTER; Lorenz Heller’s pseudonymously written CRIME COP & BODY OF THE CRIME, two police novels originally published by Pyramid; Lionel White’s heist yarns, STEAL BIG & THE BIG CAPER; and P. J. Wolfson’s novel about a cruel and corrupt New York City cop. Entitled BODIES ARE DUST, it was previously reprinted as HELL COP, by Berkeley. Mike will also have copies of Peter Enfantino’s and Jeff Vorzimmer’s complete issue-to-issue guide to MANHUNT MAGAZINE, as well as other Stark House titles.
DMR BOOKS publishes fantasy, horror, and adventure fiction in the traditions of Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H. P. Lovecraft, and other classic writers of the pulp era. In addition to such single-author collections as Edmond Hamilton’s THE AVENGER OF ATLANTIS and Poul Anderson’s SWORDSMEN FROM THE STARS, publisher D. M. Ritzlin will have anthologies such as RENEGADE SWORDS, PLANETARY ADVENTURES, and the recently published PREHISTORIC ADVENTURES. Edited by Ritzlin, the latter includes Arthur Petticolas’ novella, “Dinosaur Destroyer,” from the January 1949 AMAZING STORIES, Robert E. Howard’s first published story, “Spear and Fang,” and three other great pulp adventures.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. will be represented by Director of Publishing, Christopher Paul Carey, and Vice President of Operations, Cathy Mann Wilbanks. Founded in 1923 by author Edgar Rice Burroughs to manage the rights to his literary works, the company continues to be owned by the Burroughs’ family and remains based in Tarzana, California. Chris and Cathy will have copies of the latest volumes in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library™ and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe™, including Geary Gravel’s JOHN CARTER OF MARS: GODS OF THE FORGOTTEN. They’ll also have copies of BEYOND THE FARTHEST STAR: RESTORED EDITION, and the restored “Centennial Edition” of THE GIRL FROM HOLLYWOOD.
PulpFest is very pleased to welcome back David and Daniel Ritter of First Fandom Experience to our 2021 convention. First Fandom Experience is a collaborative publishing project that aims to honor, preserve, and bring to life the experience of the pioneering fans who defined, drove, and grew science fiction in the 1930s and beyond. At PulpFest 2021, First Fandom Experience will be previewing the next volume in THE VISUAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION FANDOM, covering the 1940s. They’ll also have copies of their “legacy titles” — THE VISUAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION FANDOM, VOLUME ONE: THE 1930s and THE EARLIEST BRADBURY — as well as their recently published ROY V. HUNT, A RETROSPECTIVE.
R. David Fulcher is the editor of SAMSARA, a small press magazine that has showcased the work of writers and poets for over a decade. David’s wife, Lisa Flach-Fulcher, is the managing editor of the magazine. They’re both returning to PulpFest for a second time.
An author of poetry, science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction, David’s major literary influences include H. P. Lovecraft, Dean Koontz, Edgar Allan Poe, Fritz Leiber, and Stephen King. R. David is also a fan of horror films and will be selling THE MOVIES THAT MAKE YOU SCREAM! as well as other work.
Noir Hayes is a self-published, independent writer who will be attending her first PulpFest. Noir’s novel RAZOR BLADES has been called “a violent version of THE OUTSIDERS and FIGHT CLUB, but with fewer rules. WITHOUT CESSATION — published in late 2020 — concerns a washed-up romance novelist. It’s remindful of the Christopher Nolan film, INCEPTION, with its “book-within a book” style. She’ll have both works at her table in the PulpFest 2021 dealers’ room. Noir loves creating worlds and characters bigger than herself, and sharing her art with the world. Be sure to stop by to visit.
Some of the creators listed above will be part of our “New Fictioneers Readings” on Friday and Saturday, while others will be participating in panels and presentations. So what are you waiting for? Book a room for three nights and register now for PulpFest 2021. And don’t forget about ERBFest 2021 — this summer’s convention for fans of Edgar Rice Burroughs and his work — also taking place at the same location. That’s two great conventions for the price of one, only at the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh — Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania.
