PulpFest is not only lauded for its excellent programming but also its very substantial dealers’ room.
Beginning on Thursday, August 19, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry will be home to thousands of collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and much more.
What dealers are we expecting at PulpFest 2021? For the next five days, we’ll be profiling our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them so you get to know them . . .
RAY WALSH of the CURIOUS BOOK SHOP has been selling a broad array of paper collectibles – pulps, paperbacks, original artwork, collectible hardcovers, vintage comic books, and more — for nearly fifty years. Out of East Lansing, Michigan, Ray has been selling at PulpFest — and Pulpcon before it — for decades. We appreciate his long support. Ray is one of the founders and organizers of the Michigan Antiquarian Book & Paper Show, the Midwest’s largest book and paper show.
DEARLY DEPARTED BOOKS of Alliance, Ohio is a brick & mortar shop open by chance or appointment. It primarily sells via the Internet. Established in 1978 by SCOTT and LINDA EDWARDS, this loyal PulpFest dealer offers a large stock of mystery, science fiction, horror, fantasy, vintage paperbacks, first editions, pulp magazines, and related ephemera. This year, they’ll be selling pulps, paperbacks, hardbound first editions, Big Little Books, and more. They’ll also have a few Philip José Farmer manuscripts, as well as a very rare promotional piece sent to Farmer by the director of the 1974 Doc Savage movie, starring Ron Ely.
From 1982 – 85, JENNIFER DIGIACOMO was the publisher of SAVAGE SOCIETY OF BRONZE, a Doc Savage fanzine. A resident of New York City, this will be Jennifer’s first year as a PulpFest dealer. She’ll also be featured as one of our evening presenters. Join Jen on Friday evening, August 20, for “Jen Lightfoot and Her Mad Auto Dash” in the PulpFest programming room. And don’t forget to swing by her table in the dealers’ room to say hi and peruse a few odds and sods from her personal collection.
D. M. RITZLIN founded DMR BOOKS in 2015 with the aim of revitalizing the sword-and-sorcery genre. DMR’s publications include reprints of classic material by authors such as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, and Manly Wade Wellman, as well as brand-new collections and anthologies by some of the finest fantasy writers active today. A writer himself, Dave will have single-author collections such as Edmond Hamilton’s THE AVENGER OF ATLANTIS and TWILIGHT OF THE GODS and Poul Anderson’s SWORDSMEN FROM THE STARS, as well as such anthologies as RENEGADE SWORDS and PLANETARY ADVENTURES.
DMR author Schuyler Hernstrom will be at the convention on Saturday, August 21. He’ll be glad to sign copies of his book THE EYE OF SOUNNU.
Founded in 1977 and located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this will be DREAMHAVENBOOKS‘ fifth PulpFest. GREG KETTER specializes in new and used science fiction, fantasy, horror, film and media books, comics, and graphic novels. An independent bookseller, Greg has been selling books and pulps for over forty years. We look forward to having Dreamhaven return to our dealers’ room.
Let’s welcome back DAVID EARLE to his second PulpFest as a dealer. He’ll be selling pulps and related materials, collectible paperbacks, miscellaneous genre-fiction, and some comic-related books at his dealer table. Originally from Cleveland, David has been collecting pulps since he was twelve when he met and was befriended by the late Sheldon Jaffery. He is the Chair of Art and Design at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida. His research concentrates on the history of American Magazines.
CHRISTOPHER PAUL CAREY, Director of Publishing, and CATHY MANN WILBANKS, Vice President of Operations, will be representing EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS, INC. at PulpFest 2021. Christopher and Cathy will have all the latest publications from the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe™ to the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library™ to everything in between. Along with Henry G. Franke III of The Burroughs Bibliophiles and PulpFest, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. was instrumental in putting together this summer’s ERBFest, taking place at our convention. In addition to appearing on several panels at ERBFest 2021, Chris will also be reading from his upcoming ERB Universe novel, VICTORY HARBEN: FIRES OF HALOS, during our New Fictioneers’ author readings on Friday, August 20.
Two of the organizers of the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, DOUG ELLIS & DEB FULTON will have a wide selection of general fiction, science-fiction, adventure, and other pulps to offer. They’ll also have original art and other collectibles at this year’s PulpFest. Stop by their tables and you’re bound to find something that you can’t do without! On Saturday evening, August 21, Doug will be discussing “The Weird Tales of Margaret Brundage” in our PulpFest programming room.
PulpFest is very pleased to welcome DAVID & DANIEL RITTER of FIRST FANDOM EXPERIENCE back to our 2021 convention. The publishers of THE VISUAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION FANDOM, THE EARLIEST BRADBURY, and more, First Fandom Experience seeks to honor, preserve and bring to life the experience of the pioneering fans who were instrumental in defining, driving, growing, and supporting science fiction and fantasy. R. DAVID FULCHER is an author of poetry, science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction. His major literary influences include H. P. Lovecraft, Dean Koontz, Edgar Allan Poe, Fritz Leiber, and Stephen King. His books include BLOOD SPIDERS AND DARK MOON, TRAINS TO NOWHERE AND OTHER STORIES OF WORLD WAR II, and other titles. His work has also appeared in numerous small press publications. Along with his wife, LISA FULCHER, David is the editor of the small press magazine SAMSARA, which has showcased the work of writers and poets for over a decade. The Fulchers come to us from Virginia.
Scouring flea markets and antique shows up and down the East Coast, RICK HALL rescues pulps from the bottoms of musty old boxes for the collections of his fellows in the pulp community. Focusing primarily on pulp magazines, Rick adds fanzines and general magazines with “good authors” to the mix. You may find just what you’ve been looking for among Rick’s “found” treasures.
A resident of Davenport, Iowa, DENNIS HARFORD has been selling at various pulp conventions for quite a few years. Pay a visit to his table during PulpFest 2021 and you’ll be surprised at what you find. Hopefully, it will be something you’ve been wanting for years.
SCOTT HARTSHORN is an outgoing, Florida-based collector and dealer. He will be offering a selection of pulps, books by Robert E. Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs, mystery and detective paperbacks, and science-fiction, fantasy, and pulp art. Scott is also planning to have a few collectible surprises as he returns to Pittsburgh for another PulpFest.
JOHN HAUSER is a resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Over the years, he has brought to market two pedigree collections of comics — The Green River and The Curator collections — and has sold other fine collections on consignment. With the passing of Ron Killian of Milwaukee’s The Turning Page, John is selling Killian’s massive collection of pulps and books. John’s appearance at PulpFest 2021 will provide another opportunity for the public to buy part of Ron Killian’s terrific collection as well as other great material from John’s stock.

Designed by PulpFest’s artistic director, William Lampkin, our PulpFest 2021 postcard features the work of artist J. Allen St. John. It was adapted from the artist’s cover painting for AMAZING STORIES for March 1941, illustrating the Edgar Rice Burroughs’ novella, “The City of Mummies.”
Poul Anderson’s SWORDSMEN FROM THE STARS — published in 2020 by DMR Books — is a collection of three novellas from the pages of PLANET STORIES. The book’s cover art is by Allen Anderson. It was originally the front cover art for the May 1952 issue of the Fiction House pulp magazine.
Published in 1982 by Pulp Press — a publishing house founded by Ray Walsh and Robert Weinberg — Robert Weinberg’s THE NIGHT MASTER is an affectionate study and survey of the best-selling pulp hero ever created, The Shadow. Released in hardcover, Sampson’s book features a jacket illustration by the late Frank Hamilton.
