Due to a medical emergency in the immediate family of one of our presenters, “Love in the Shadows — The Art of Earle K. Bergey and Enoch Bolles” will not take place at PulpFest 2021.
Originally scheduled for Friday evening, August 20, the presentation was to feature the authority on the life and work of Earle K. Bergey, Joshua David Bergey, the grandson of the artist. His co-presenter was Jack Raglin — a professor in the department of kinesiology at Indiana University in Bloomington — who happens to be the leading authority in the world on artist Enoch Bolles.
Both Earle K. Bergey — who was born almost 120 years ago on August 26, 1901 — and Enoch Bolles were among the leading illustrators for the so-called girlie pulps. Our presenters and their families are in our prayers.
Another guest who we were looking forward to meeting at this year’s convention, artist Joe DeVito, has also been forced to cancel his appearance due to scheduling complications.
On a more positive note, our advance registrations are running about 25% higher than previous PulpFests. Our host hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry, also reports that they’ve sold more rooms for this year’s PulpFest than any previous year.
Although it’s too late to reserve a room at the convention rate, you can still get a room at the DoubleTree by clicking the “Book a Room” button at the top of our homepage or by calling 800-222-8733 or 724-776-6900.
As of July 31, the Pennsylvania Department of Health has no immediate plans to reinstate face mask mandates or other restrictions despite new updated federal health guidelines and rising COVID-19 infections in the state. According to THE NEW YORK TIMES, as of July 30, 2021, Pennsylvania had the sixth-lowest number of coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents in the last seven days among all of the states and the District of Columbia.
According to the DoubleTree’s website, masks are optional for guests and DoubleTree Team Members who are fully vaccinated. The hotel follows Hilton’s brand standard and asks those who are not vaccinated to please wear a mask indoors and practice social distancing.
Although we can’t force anyone, it’s our hope that everyone who plans to attend PulpFest 2021 will be vaccinated against COVID-19. We have many older members who attend PulpFest. Please keep them in mind. Remember, we’re all in this together.
You can still register in advance for PulpFest 2021 and ERBFest 2021. Both conventions are covered by your PulpFest registration. We’re accepting memberships for both regular attendees and dealers.
To register for PulpFest and ERBFest 2021, please click the Registration button at the top of our website. You’ll find instructions on how to pay for your membership — including via Paypal — at the bottom of our registration page.
If you’d like to sell at PulpFest 2021, we recommend that you register as soon as possible. However, wall tables are no longer available and only a few island tables remain. We will be writing about our PulpFest 2021 dealers during the first week of August.
If you have any questions about registering, please email PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers at jack@pulpfest.com.
Finally, our liaison with the DoubleTree has inquired about interest in a dinner buffet in the hotel lounge. If you’re planning to attend PulpFest 2021, please let us know if such an option would be of interest to you. Most likely, the buffet would take place on Saturday evening. Again, please email PulpFest chairman Jack Cullers at jack@pulpfest.com if you’d be likely to attend a dinner buffet in the DoubleTree’s restaurant.
We hope to see you from August 19 – 21 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania for PulpFest and ERBFest 2021.
Designed by PulpFest’s artistic director, William Lampkin, one of our PulpFest 2021 postcards featured the work of artist Earle K. Bergey. The art was originally done for the October 1931 issue of SNAPPY and was intended to help PulpFest promote “Love in the Shadows: The Art of Earle K. Bergey and Enoch Bolles.” PulpFest 2021 also used the artist’s cover painting for the December 1948 number of POPULAR LOVE as the background for its postcard, mailed to a limited number of conventions over recent months.
Out ERBFest 2021 logo was designed and created by award-winning artist Mark Wheatley .
