Bring on the fireworks! It’s time to celebrate our nation’s freedom. What better time for PulpFest to say thanks for all of the donations that we have received? We’ll be giving most of them to our members free of charge. The only requirement is to be at PulpFest 2021 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry between August 19 and August 22.
First of all, we’d like to thank Ben Ohmart and BearManor Media for a selection of beautiful hardbound books from the Palik series, published under the auspices of the North American Jules Verne Society. There’s also a copy of LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT, a reconstruction of the lost Tod Browning film starring Lon Chaney. BearManor Media is a small press known for publishing books on movies, television, Old Time Radio, theater, animation, and previously unpublished scripts.
Dustin Wright and Chaosium Inc. — the publisher of CALL OF CTHULHU and other role-playing games — have been donating to our convention for many years. Chaosium has donated several horror and fantasy books that will serve as door prizes at PulpFest 2021.
Many thanks to Jess Terrell and the For the Love of All Things EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS Facebook group for their continuing sponsorship of pulpfest.com. It’s a tremendous way to help us with our celebration of the pulp writers, editors, publishers, and artists who continue to inspire contemporary creators of the world’s popular culture.
Florida-based Heartwood Books and Art has been buying and selling vintage pulps, first editions, magazines, paperbacks, and other collectibles for over 25 years. Heartwood has more than 100,000 items available for sale, including several world-class collections and one-of-a-kind gems. We want to thank Richard Meli and Heartwood for sponsoring the PulpFest 2021 welcome banner that you’ll see when you arrive at the convention.
Gordon Van Gelder and THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY & SCIENCE FICTION — celebrating its 72nd anniversary in 2021 — has provided PulpFest with several cartons of back issues. These will be handed out by our registration staff as long as supplies last. The award-winning magazine has been supporting PulpFest — and Pulpcon before it — for decades. We’re extremely grateful for the long-standing support of F&SF.
Also helping to sponsor pulpfest.com are Mike Chomko, Books and ThePulp.Net, your link to the online world of the pulp magazines since 1996!
We’d also like to thank the Pittsburgh area bookstores and comic shops that have helped to promote “Summer’s Pulp Con” this year. Special thanks to Steve Ericson of Books from the Crypt, Ron Adams of Creepy Classics, Jeff Harper Productions, Todd McDevitt of New Dimension Comics, and Project Pride and Robert E. Howard Days for their help promoting PulpFest in 2021.
Finally, we want to thank an anonymous PulpFest dealer for his kind contribution to this year’s PulpFest. We’ll be using this donation for the schedule hangtags that every registered member of PulpFest 2021 will be wearing at the convention.
If you are not from the Pittsburgh area and have yet to book your room for this year’s PulpFest, July 27 is the last day to receive the special convention rate. By staying at the DoubleTree, you’ve helped to ensure the convention’s success.
The Summer 2021 edition of PulpFest will celebrate the anniversaries of two trend-setting Street & Smith rough-paper magazines. Both LOVE STORY and THE SHADOW MAGAZINE played significant roles in the evolution of American popular culture and genre fiction. We hope you’ll join us for “Love in the Shadows.”
During July and August 1942, just months after the United States entered World War II, magazines nationwide featured the American flag on their covers. Adopting the slogan “United We Stand,” some five hundred publications waved the stars and stripes to promote national unity, rally support for the war, and celebrate Independence Day. Freelance artist Charles DeFeo contributed the cover art for Street & Smith’s “United We Stand” campaign. DeFeo’s artwork appeared across the publisher’s line of pulp magazines. Pictured here is the cover for the August 1, 1942 number of THE SHADOW.
One year prior to the “United We Stand” campaign, Street & Smith’s LOVE STORY MAGAZINE featured a patriotic cover painted by Modest Stein on its July 5, 1941 number. Stein did the same once again for the July 1943 issue of Street & Smith’s SPORT STORY MAGAZINE, our featured image.
