Earlier in May, we announced that PulpFest 2021 will proceed as planned. We’re hoping that by August 19 – 22, our collective lives will be more “normal.” That’s why we’re urging everyone who plans to attend PulpFest 2021 to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Unfortunately, the coronavirus has impacted many conventions that fans would usually attend. Most have been canceled, postponed, or gone virtual. Only a few are proceeding as planned.
Robert E. Howard Days will take place June 11 and 12 at the Robert E. Howard Museum in Cross Plains, Texas. The convention’s guest of honor will be comic book writer and Stan Lee’s successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics, Roy Thomas.
This year’s Howard Days will celebrate 51 years of Robert E. Howard in comics. The convention’s guest of honor is probably best known for introducing Conan to American comic books. Working largely with artists Barry Windsor Smith and John Buscema, Roy Thomas adapted Howard’s character to comics. Marvel’s CONAN THE BARBARIAN debuted with its October 1970 issue.
In addition to the guest of honor speech and interview, there will be an autograph session, panels and presentations, walking and bus tours, readings and book signings, a dealers’ area, and much more.

Although this year’s Monster Bash at the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh — Cranberry has been postponed, there will be a Monster Bash Under the Stars at the Riverside Drive-In in Vandergrift, Pennsylvania. Presented by Creepy Classics, the show will “be screening the most fun 1950s monster movies on the giant outdoor drive-in screen both nights! Dusk till late, very, very late. Plus all the vintage drive-in trailers, refreshment ads, and shorts you love!” Monster Bash Under the Stars will also take place on June 11 and 12.
Inside the drive-in’s concession building you’ll find the Creepy Classics crew selling blu-rays, DVDs, T-shirts, monster models and magazines, collectibles, and much more! Longtime horror host, Son of Ghoul, will also be appearing at the event, as well as horror film historian and novelist Frank Dello Stritto, monster movie artist Malcolm Gittins, and writer Brad Braddock. Additionally, there will be vendors in tents scattered around the grounds.

Pulp con history looks to be made when you attend the very first Pulp Fiction Convention on June 13 at the Doubletree by Hilton Cleveland – Westlake. It’s being organized by Jeff Harper, a longtime comic book convention promoter and supporter of PulpFest. This first-time event – postponed from last year – will feature Edgar-nominated historical mystery author Craig McDonald; new pulp writers Charles F. Millhouse and Flinch! Books authors/publishers John Bruening and Jim Beard; vintage pulp continuation author and PulpFest organizing committee member William Patrick Maynard, and Noir Hayes, who describes herself as a “writer creating characters and worlds bigger than myself.”
On June 27, Jeff will also host the Akron-Canton Comic-Con in Akron, Ohio. Jeff’s Buckeye Comic-Con will take place July 18 in Columbus, Ohio. Check out Jeff Harper’s webpage for more information.

No one defined the look of WEIRD TALES like the magazine’s premier cover artist Margaret Brundage. This talented woman created countless cover paintings illustrating the work of Paul Ernst, Edmond Hamilton, Robert E. Howard, Seabury Quinn, Jack Williamson, and others. Brundage’s pastel cover for the September 1938 issue of WEIRD TALES illustrates Seabury Quinn’s novelette, “As ‘Twas Told to Me.” The issue also features “A Thunder of Trumpets,” a short story co-written by Howard that was advertised by the pulp as, “the last fiction that flowed from his inspired pen before his untimely death.”
On Friday evening, August 20, join PulpFest 2021 for “The Weird Tales of Margaret Brundage,” presented by pulp scholar and co-founder of the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, Doug Ellis. It’s just one of many fine presentations planned for this year’s PulpFest.
