Ring out the old, ring in the new. Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, ring in Pulpfest, and the joys you’ll find.
The PulpFest organizing committee — Mike Chomko, Jack and Sally Cullers, Bill Lampkin, Sara Light-Waller, William Patrick Maynard, and Barry Traylor — would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.
Although we can’t be sure what’s in store for 2021, we are certainly hopeful that the year will bring us much brighter times than we’ve experienced in 2020.
A New Year means new beginnings. At PulpFest 2021, we’ll celebrate the centennial of Street & Smith’s LOVE STORY MAGAZINE, the 90th anniversary of THE SHADOW, A DETECTIVE MAGAZINE, and more. We hope you’ll join us from August 19 – 22 for “Love in the Shadows” at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. Click the “registration” button below the PulpFest banner to learn how to become a member.
(Between 1922 and early 1943, Modest Stein painted over 100 covers — including the December 28, 1940 number (eighty years old today) — for LOVE STORY MAGAZINE. His primary markets were the Munsey chain and Street & Smith. For the latter, he created covers for CLUES, COMPLETE STORIES, DETECTIVE STORIES, FAR WEST ILLUSTRATED, PEOPLE’S FAVORITE MAGAZINE, and, particularly, LOVE STORY MAGAZINE. In later years, he added ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION, CRIME BUSTERS, DOC SAVAGE, MYSTERY MAGAZINE, PICTURE PLAY, ROMANTIC RANGE, THE SHADOW, and UNKNOWN to his oeuvre for the Street & Smith pulp line. Watch for our post on the artist in February 2021.)
