Not only is PulpFest lauded for its excellent programming, it is also known for its very substantial dealers’ room.
Beginning on Thursday, July 27, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry will be home to thousands of collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and more.
Who are we expecting at PulpFest 2017? For the next four days, we’ll be profiling some of our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them to help you know them . . .
Our 2010 Munsey Award winner MIKE CHOMKO will be representing Altus Press, Stark House Press, and other small publishers at PulpFest 2017. He’ll be premiering multiple titles from various publishers and have a selection of other materials, including a number of pulp fanzines. RAY WALSH of the CURIOUS BOOK SHOP has been selling a broad array of paper collectibles – pulps, paperbacks, original artwork, collectible hardcovers, vintage comic books, and more — for nearly fifty years. Out of East Lansing, Michigan, Ray has been selling at PulpFest — and Pulpcon before it — for decades. We appreciate his strong support and heartily recommend the convention he sponsors — Classicon — held twice each year in Lansing, Michigan. In addition to his regular stock, Ray should have some very nice science fiction pulps and collectable science fiction books at this year’s PulpFest.
Working in the antiquarian book trade since the late fifties, LLOYD CURREY is one of the leading specialists in popular fiction from the earliest times to the present. A member of the Antiquarian Booksellers of America, Inc., Lloyd operates a full-time, mail order antiquarian bookstore based in New York’s Adirondack Mountains. As L. W. CURREY, INC, he specializes in literary first editions, with an emphasis on popular fiction, including science fiction, fantasy, supernatural and horror, utopian literature, and mystery and detective fiction. At PulpFest 2017, Lloyd will be offering pulps and first editions.
A new and used book store that also sells pulps and comic books, DARK STAR BOOKS is located about an hour from Columbus, in picturesque Yellow Springs, Ohio. A longtime PulpFest dealer, GARY DIEDRIECH will be representing Dark Star at our 2016 convention. He will be offering a wide range of material including pulps, digests, Big Little Books, Golden and Silver Age comic books, and collectible hardcovers and paperbacks.
DEARLY DEPARTED BOOKS of Alliance, Ohio is a brick & mortar shop open by chance or appointment. It primarily sells via the Internet. Established in 1978 by SCOTT and LINDA EDWARDS, this loyal PulpFest dealer offers a large stock of mystery, science fiction, horror, fantasy, vintage paperbacks, first editions, pulp magazines, and related ephemera. This year they’ll have pulps, paperbacks, hardbound first editions, and a newly acquired collection Big Little & Better Little Books for sale.
KEITH DILBONE will be returning to PulpFest after a long absence. If you’re looking for vintage British and foreign paperbacks and digests, be sure to stop by Keith’s tables. He’ll be selling a large portion of his personal British collection, amassed over the past 30 years: WORLD FANTASY CLASSICS, AUTHENTIC SCIENCE FICTION, VARGO STATTEN, plus publishers Scion, Curtis Warren, Dragon and smaller, hard to find publishers, including many key books. Also 100’s of American hard to find and key paperbacks, from Ace to Zenith.We’re glad to have Keith back at “Summer’s AMAZING Pulp Con.”
Founded in 1977 and located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, this will be DREAMHAVEN BOOKS‘ third PulpFest. GREG KETTER specializes in new and used science fiction, fantasy, and horror, as well as books, magazines, posters, toys, and other materials related to the film industry. Greg has been selling books and pulps for over forty years. We look forward to having Dreamhaven return to our dealers’ room.
DOUG & DEB ELLIS, two of the founders of the Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention, will be offering a wide selection of general fiction, science-fiction, Burroughs, and other pulps as well as original art and other collectibles. They’ll also be bringing WEINBERG TALES, a tribute book to the late Bob Weinberg.
JIM BEARD & JOHN BRUENING of FLINCH BOOKS, publishers of “in-your-face pulp-style adventure fiction,” will be on hand with their newest prose anthology, RESTLESS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF MUMMY HORROR, as well as copies of their previous anthology titles: BIG TOP TALES: SIX NEW STORIES OF CIRCUS ADVENTURE and SOMETHING STRANGE IS GOING ON: NEW TALES FROM THE FLETCHER HANKS UNIVERSE. They’ll also have copies of John’s 2016 debut novel, THE MIDNIGHT GUARDIAN: HOUR OF DARKNESS on hand. Jim – who also provides regular content for Marvel.com, the official Marvel Comics website – will also be offering a wide selection of his own fiction work, including publications from Airship 27, Meteor House and Pro Se Productions. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears peeled throughout Pulpfest weekend, because the Flinch team will be sharing information about their forthcoming title scheduled for release in the fall of 2017.
Stop by and visit with BOB FLOWERS of central Illinois. He’ll have his son, James, along to help. This good-natured collector and dealer usually has a little bit of everything. He sells pulps, paperbacks, fanzines, and related material. His offerings come from a wide range of genres – hero, detective, adventure, science fiction, and western — all reasonably priced. Shop with Bob for good, honest deals. We think you’ll be extremely happy.
HAROLD & HONEY FORMAN have attended many pulp conventions since the 1970s. Although Harold and his wife have been PulpFest regulars, this will be the first time since 2009 that they’ve attended the convention as dealers. Residing in Pittsburgh, the Formans will be selling genre fiction, collections, anthologies, art books and magazines.
ROBERT GARCIA has been making, publishing and selling books for over 30 years. He’ll be bringing paperback collectibles featuring mystery, science fiction, fantasy and controversial mainstream titles to PulpFest 2017, along with a selection of limited edition fantasy and science fiction titles. Bob will also have American Fantasy Press titles and copies of his book, BATMAN: A CELEBRATION OF THE CLASSIC TV SERIES, published by Titan Books.
PulpFest welcomes LARRY “DOC” GRUBB, a collector since the 1960s, and his son, JASPER, back to PulpFest. They’ll have many first edition works by Edgar Rice Burroughs and a variety of pulp magazines, all at great prices. The Grubbs hail from Maryland and we’re very glad to have them back at our convention.
MARK HALEGUA is the founder of the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club. In addition to selling his Pulps 1st CDs — featuring thousands of pulp cover images on each disc — Mark will have an assortment of pulp magazines, including a number of ASTOUNDING STORIES issues published by Clayton. He’ll also have key issues of various comic books available for sale. Be sure to visit with this very personable dealer out of Queens.

(One of the themes of PulpFest 2017 will be a celebration of the hardboiled detective genre. It was in the pages of THE BLACK MASK where the style emerged — first in the tales of Carrol John Daly — and evolved — then in the stories of Dashiell Hammett. In 2016, Matt Moring and Altus Press successfully relaunched this magazine classic. The second issue of the new BLACK MASK was released by Mike Chomko, Books at the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention. It featured cover art by Norman Saunders. The painting was originally used as the cover for the December 1952 issue of DIME DETECTIVE.
You might find the March 1952 issue of PLANET STORIES, featuring one dangerous-looking dame painted by Allen Anderson, in the PulpFest dealers’ room. Dark Star Books, DreamHaven Books, and other sellers are noted for the science fiction collectibles that they offer.
