More Fall Conventions

Martin Grams’ Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention won’t be the only game in town come September. The month will also have no less than three gatherings celebrating Edgar Rice Burroughs and his work as well as the anniversary of the founding of the Hidalgo Trading Company.

Leading things off will be the 2024 Dum-Dum, the annual convention of The Burroughs Bibliophiles. Named after the gatherings of the Great Apes described by Edgar Rice Burroughs in his Tarzan novels, this year’s Dum-Dum will be hosted by Bibliophiles’ chairperson Gary Buckingham. It will take place September 22 – 23 in Rhinelander, Wisconsin at the Quality Inn.

The convention will feature a dealers’ room, an auction, a banquet at Little Bohemia Lodge, and the presentation of the Bibliophiles’ Outstanding Achievement Award. The Burroughs Bibliophiles’ Board of Directors will also hold its annual meeting at the convention. Click here to learn more about the 2024 Dum-Dum.

Just one week after the Dum-Dum, the Northwest Coast Mangani Chapter of the  Burroughs Bibliophiles will host NCM V, celebrating Edgar Rice Burroughs in pulps, books, comic books, comic strips, fandom, film, and television. This year’s gathering with be a tribute to Richard and Patricia Lupoff.

Taking place September 29 – 30 at the Best Western Plus in Roseville, California, NCM V will feature award-winning artist Thomas Yeates and, possibly, fantasy illustrator and painter Richard Hescox. Also appearing will be writer and illustrator Daniel Brereton and historian David Lemmo.

On September 29 – October 1, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. will partner with the Tarzana International Film Festival to celebrate their own centennial, as well as the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros.

There will be a screening of the documentary Tarzan: The Man Behind the Legend, followed by a question-and-answer session with the film’s director and cast on opening night. The inaugural presentation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Legacy Award is also scheduled for the festival. Burroughs himself will be honored with the initial award.
