PulpFest is a top venue for writers and publishers to roll out their newest titles. Following are some of the new books that will be featured at this summer’s pulp con.
In addition to being one of the world’s largest pulp dealers, Adventure House is a very active publisher of pulp reprints and pulp replicas. In addition to having a wide selection of vintage pulp magazines, John and Maureen Gunnison will have recent issues of High Adventure and various titles in their pulp replica line, including Spicy Adventure, Spicy Detective, Spicy Mystery, and others.
Age of Aces Books is a publisher of pulp fiction treasures with a keen eye for design. At this year’s PulpFest, Chris and David Kalb will be releasing two thrilling collections from the tattered pages of the air war pulps: Donald E. Keyhoe’s Devildog Squadron: The Flying Juggernaut — six more Weird World War I stories featuring a squadron of 27 of the maddest Marines on the Western Front — and their fifth collection of Ralph Oppenheim’s The Adventures of The Three Mosquitoes: The Night Monster — collecting four action-packed adventures from the pages of Popular Publications’ Dare-Devil Aces.
A familiar face at PulpFest, Jim Beard of Becky Books will have a couple of new books at this year’s PulpFest. Inspired by the G.I. Joe “Adventure Team” action figures of the 1970s, Jim’s latest D.C. Jones and Adventure Command International adventure, Assault on Mummy Mountain, will be available at PulpFest 2023. He’ll also have copies of his new non-fiction anthology about old-school role-playing games from the 1970s — when Dungeons & Dragons was a brand new thing — D20 or Die! Memories of Old School Role-Playing Games. It’s part of the Becky Books series, Memories from Today’s Grown-Up Kids.
Set in Minnesota’s Twin Cities during the Great Depression, Jonathan Sweet’s Red Jackel series has been twice nominated for a Pulp Factory Award, recognizing the best in new pulp writing. The Jackel is a vigilante shaped by the powers of ancient Egypt; a crimefighter who will defend the powerless and terrify the guilty. Stop by the Brick Pickle Mediatable at PulpFest 2023 where Jonathan will have copies of the latest Red Jackal adventure, Eye of Vengeance. Find out why readers call the Red Jackal an essential addition to the hero pulps!
Mike Chomko, Books will be representing Stark House Press at this year’s PulpFest. He’ll have Gil Brewer’s Satan Is a Woman & 13 French Street, two early noir novels originally published by Gold Medal; Pulp Champagne: The Short Fiction of Lorenz Heller, a collection of the best short crime stories of the prolific paperback writer; and the definitive version of Jonathan Latimer’s hardboiled classic, The Fifth Grave: The Unexpurgated Text. He’ll also have some of Stark’s classic backlist, including their excellent Manhunt anthologies and non-fiction titles such as Paperback Confidential and The Manhunt Companion.
Mike will also have the latest release from Steeger Books, including the newest volumes in their celebrated Black Mask Library, as well as a Gadget Man collection, written by Lester Dent, the creator of Doc Savage. Clickell Rush, “The Gadget Man,” had eighteen stories in Street & Smith’s Crime Busters pulp. The character also appeared in the publisher’s line of comic books. Mike Chomko, Books will have these and more, including back issues of The Pulpster, the award-winning program book published annually by PulpFest.
Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. will be represented by Director of Publishing, Christopher Paul Carey, and Vice President of Operations, Cathy Mann Wilbanks. Founded in 1923 by author Edgar Rice Burroughs to manage the rights to his literary works, the company continues to be owned by the Burroughs’ family and remains based in Tarzana, California. Chris and Cathy will have copies of the latest volumes in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Authorized Library™ and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe™. And if the books arrive from the printer in time, the mammoth omnibuses Cosmic Epics — collecting A Princess of Mars, The Moon Maid, and Pirates of Venus — and Savage Epics — collecting Tarzan of the Apes, At the Earth’s Core, and The Land That Time Forgot — will be seeing their worldwide debut at PulpFest 2023.
Although ERB Books won’t physically be at PulpFest 2023, the publisher will be with us in spirit. Just as PulpFest is doing, ERB Books is celebrating the centennial of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Moon Trilogy” with a special Centennial Edition of the series. By special arrangement with the publisher, PulpFest fans and attendees can get $20 off The Centennial Edition by adding coupon code CHOMKO20 to your shopping cart. You can also use this coupon on At the Earth’s Core, Tarzan of the Apes, and the Standard Edition or the Deluxe Leather Edition of Robert B. Zeuschner’s Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Bibliography.
