PulpFest is a top venue for writers and publishers to roll out their newest titles. Following are some of the new books that will be featured at our 5oth summertime convention.
We Are Doc Savage is a feature-length documentary film that will focus on the collectors, creators, and characters of Doc Savage fandom. Director Ron Hill is a lifelong Doc Savage fan and a contributor of articles, artwork, and cartoons to The Bronze Gazette, the premier Doc Savage fanzine. His first Savage articles appeared on the Hidalgo Trading Company website in 1996. Ron and Act 3 will have a table at PulpFest 50 where attendees will learn how they can support this exciting film through their stories and a Kickstarter campaign. The film’s release is planned for 2023 to honor the 90th anniversary of the Man of Bronze’s first pulp adventures.
A professional writer and illustrator with over thirty years of experience, Sara Light-Waller is an accomplished new-pulp fiction author/illustrator. She is the winner of the 2020 Cosmos Prize for her illustrated short story, “Battle at Neptune.” At PulpFest 50, she hopes to have copies of Incorruptible, her third illustrated new pulp novelette. A member of the PulpFest organizing committee and a regular contributor to our website and The Pulpster, Sara has a recent series of new pulp paintings as well as her book illustrations to view and purchase on her studio website, Flying Pony Studios.
Author of the Edgar-nominated “Hector Lassiter” historical crime series, Craig McDonald is an award-winning novelist, journalist, and editor. The “Lassiter” series chronicles the exploits of a fictional Black Mask author and his encounters with such notable figures as Ernest Hemingway, Orson Welles, Ian Fleming, and Lester Dent. McDonald’s internationally acclaimed works have found a global audience and have also been adapted in graphic novel format. Craig — who writes regularly for pulpfest.com — will have copies of his new Doc Savage and The Shadow-inflected novel available at PulpFest 50. We hope you’ll also join us for our Meteor House panel on August 5.

Bob Deis and Wyatt Doyle are the co-editors of The Men’s Adventure Library book series, published by New Texture. It collects classic stories and artwork from the men’s adventure magazines that were published during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. They’ll be debuting two new books at PulpFest 50. Pollen in Print, 1955-1959 is the first book in a planned series chronologically reproducing artist Samson Pollen’s artwork as it originally appeared in layout in men’s adventure magazines. They’ll also have copies of George Gross: Covered, the first book to showcase men’s adventure magazine covers created by the longtime Fiction House artist. They’ll also be selling copies of the great new magazine, Men’s Adventure Quarterly, that Bob publishes with Bill Cunningham of Pulp 2.0 Press. August Audible releases from Redfield Arts Audio include the audiobook of William Patrick Maynard’s The Terror of Fu Manchu and the full-cast audio drama adaptation of Mark Wheatley’s acclaimed graphic novel Frankenstein Mobster, starring the voices of Daniel Roebuck and Debbie Rochon. Although physical copies of both audio productions will not be ready in time for PulpFest 50, Mark Redfield and Jennifer Rouse will be accepting pre-orders.
World Fantasy Award winner Darrell Schweitzer has been publishing in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction fields since the early 1970s. He will have copies of the first American edition of Living with the Dead. On the knife-edge of horror and dark comedy, like an improbable collaboration between Franz Kafka and Clive Barker, Schweitzer’s novel was a Shirley Jackson Award finalist when it was first published in the United Kingdom in 2008. Darrell will also be selling copies of his two-volume retrospective, The Best of Darrell Schweitzer as well as his other books.
Cartoonist Don Simpson is best known for his comic book series Megaton Man, Border Worlds, and Bizarre Heroes. His latest publication is Victory Folks, the Golden Age public domain super-team published in YEET! Presents #50. The issue features Don’s inimitable interpretations of Fletcher Hanks’ eerie favorites, Stardust and Fantomah. This year, Don also illustrated Wayne Carey’s science-fiction novel Yokai, which debuts from Airship 27. Both author and publisher will have tables at PulpFest 50. So be sure to pick up a copy of Yokai. In the meantime, here’s one of Don’s nine illustrations for the book.
Matt Moring of Steeger Books will be sharing a table with Walker Martin. Winner of the Munsey Award in 2012, Matt will have the latest releases from Steeger Books, one of the leading publishers of pulp reprints in the world. Shaw. Visit the Steeger Books’ Facebook page for more details.
The author of the Utgarda pulp adventure series, Joab Stieglitz has crossed his love for cosmic horror and fantasy and role-playing games into a Lovecraftian occult horror series that will appeal to pulp fans, Cthulhu Mythos acolytes, gamers, and horror movie fans in equal measure. He’ll have both the original Utgarda Trilogy as well as its follow-up, the Thule Trilogy for sale at PulpFest 50. Joab will have all six books available, with significant discounts for buying one or both trilogies. The series channels H. P. Lovecraft’s and August Derleth’s Cthulhu Mythos in detailing the unspeakable entity that was unleashed upon the world by The Cabal during the 1920s.
Inducted into The Overstreet Hall of Fame in July 2017, Mark Wheatley is a long-time Edgar Rice Burroughs fan and admirer of the work of Philip José Farmer. He’s painted covers for Norvell W. Page’s The Spider: Satan’s Murder Machines and Amazon Nights by Arthur O. Friel. In collaboration with G. D. Falksen, Mark created the book Doctor Cthulittle. He also illustrated Songs of Giants: Poetry of Pulp, a collection of the very best horror, dark fantasy, and heroic sword and sorcery poetry written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, and H. P. Lovecraft. More recently, he’s contributed cover art to Meteor House, the Robert E. Howard Foundation, and First Fandom Experience. Mark and his wife Carol will have copies of his Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Visions of Adventure portfolio and more available for sale at PulpFest 50.

Our featured image is excerpted from Norman Saunders’ front cover art for the June 1950 number of Max Brand’s Western Magazine. Debuting at the end of 1949, it was one of the many western pulps released by Popular Publications due to the resounding success of their flagship title, Dime Western Magazine. Running for 33 issues, Max Brand’s Western Magazine featured a story by Frederick Faust, reprinted from a variety of sources, including Argosy, Collier’s, and Star Western.
Around the same time, Popular released a second magazine named after a popular author of western fiction: Walt Coburn’s Western Magazine. Debuting with its November 1949 number, the pulp ran for sixteen issues, ending with its June 1951 issue. Most issues featured a Coburn reprint from Dime Western Magazine, as well as a regular column by the author entitled “Walt Coburn’s Tally Book.” The author also contributed a few new stories to the periodical.
We’ll be saluting Dime Western Magazine and Popular Publications’ line of “Dime” pulps at PulpFest 50. We hope you’ll join us from August 4 – 7 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. You can become a member of the convention by clicking the Registration button on the PulpFest website. You can reserve a room by calling 800.222.8733 or 724.776.6900.
