PulpFest

Pizza at PulpFest

Thanks to the generosity of our dealers, PulpFest will celebrate its 50th anniversary at 5 PM on Thursday, August 4. We’ll have cheese, pepperoni, and Margherita pizzas available, baked to perfection by the kitchen staff of our host hotel. All PulpFest attendees are invited to have a slice or two.

Not only will Thursday’s pizza be a celebration of PulpFest‘s Golden Anniversary it will also give us an opportunity to support our host hotel. Although the pizza is on the convention’s generous dealers, the drinks are on you. Please come and enjoy a slice or two, but be sure to support the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry by purchasing something to quench your thirst.

PulpFest is more than a dealers’ room filled with tens of thousands of collectible items from pulp magazines to first edition hardcovers to original art and more.

Nor is it several evenings of fantastic presentations such as Morgan Holmes’s “Robert E. Howard and Fiction House” or tonight’s FarmerCon XVII panel.

PulpFest is people — readers, collectors, and dealers with a love for popular fiction and art. People who realize that the pulps had a profound impact on American popular culture. Thanks to all of you — dealers and members alike — PulpFest is still alive and kicking after fifty years.

Whether you eat your pizza in the hotel’s Ember & Vine open lounge area or in the privacy of your own room, please stay safe and be cognizant of others.

And be sure to support and thank the following dealers for their generous contributions to the PulpFest pizza night:

Age of Aces Books, Airship 27, Books from the Crypt, Brenner’s Collectable Books, Christopher Paul Carey, Wayne Carey, Ron Chandler, Mike Chomko Books, Bob Deis & Wyatt Doyle of New Texture, Dearly Departed Books, Jennifer DiGiacomo, DreamHaven Books, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Doug Ellis & Deb Fulton, Flinch! Just as the crowd depicted on Earle K. Bergey’s cover is cheering the winning boxer on this Fight Stories cover dated May 1929, we’ll be praising our champion dealers as we celebrate the Golden Anniversary of PulpFest on Thursday, August 4, beginning at 5 PM. Join us for “Pizza at PulpFest,” sponsored by our very generous dealers.

Speaking of champions, that’s Jack Dempsey in our featured image. The world heavyweight champion from 1919 to 1926, The Manassa Mauler was one of the most popular sports figures of the 1920s. Many of his fights set financial and attendance records. H. C. Murphy painted the champ’s portrait for the January 1929 issue of Fight Stories.

According to current CDC guidelines, masking is a critical public health tool for preventing the spread of COVID-19. Although no longer required at indoor events, any mask is better than no mask. However, masks are optional for guests.

The hotel asks that you follow all local guidelines and laws with respect to practicing social distancing and wearing a mask in public areas. Currently, the Allegheny County Health Department recommends wearing a mask when appropriate.

Although we can’t force anyone, it’s our hope that everyone who plans to attend PulpFest and FarmerCon XVII will be vaccinated against COVID-19. We will have older members attending. Please keep them in mind. Remember, we’re all in this together.
