The Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention finally turns legal in 2022. The convention will be celebrating its 21st anniversary this year.
The Windy City con returns to the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center beginning on Friday, May 6. It will run through Sunday, May 8. The doors will open at 11 AM on Friday, but early-bird shoppers will get first shot starting at 9:30 AM. The convention runs until 3 PM on Sunday.
Like PulpFest 50, Windy City will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of pulp and comic book publisher, Fiction House. In addition to a number of presentations, the publisher will be the focus of the convention’s 2022 program book, Windy City Pulp Stories. Tom Roberts, the publisher of Black Dog Books and winner of the 2008 Lamont Award, is the annual magazine’s editor.
The popular Windy City Film Festival, organized and emceed by the one and only Ed Hulse of Murania Press, returns in 2022. Material from the Robert Weinberg Estate and the Glenn Lord Estate, along with a number of interesting items from other consignors, will be the focus of the Friday and Saturday night auctions. An art show and New Pulp Sunday will also be part of the convention’s schedule.

Summer’s only pulp con will take place just outside of Pittsburgh at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. PulpFest 50 will begin Thursday, August 4, and run through Sunday afternoon, August 7.
PulpFest 50 will be celebrating “A Half-Century of Pulp Cons” — a salute to the convention’s fiftieth anniversary — and “Action for a Dime!” honoring the 90th anniversary of Popular Publications’ “Dime” pulps and the centennial of Fiction House. This year’s Windy City convention will celebrate the centennial of pulp and comic book publisher, Fiction House. Their 2022 flyer — designed by Bob Garcia of Garcia Publishing Services — was adapted from Allen Anderson’s cover for the Spring 1950 issue of Planet Stories. Debuting in 1939, the science fiction pulp ran for 71 issues, its final number dated Summer 1955.
Best remembered for its space operas or interplanetary romances, Planet Stories also published notable work by Leigh Brackett, Ray Bradbury, Fredric Brown, Philip K. Dick, Theodore Sturgeon, and other leading science fiction writers.
Derek Starr is a writer and popular culture enthusiast who has volunteered to help the PulpFest organizing committee. He’s looking forward to writing more for our website and The Pulpster.
