With the next PulpFest in 10 months, what’s a pop culture fan to do? How about attending another convention? Coming in late October and early November are four great shows.
Creepy Classic’s Monster Bash returns to the DoubleTree by Hilton Pittsburgh — Cranberry from October 22 – 24 for a celebration of the classic horror and science fiction films of the silent era through the 1960s. It’s a film festival; a place to meet the people in the movies, behind the movies, and fellow fans of the movies; and a monster memorabilia shopping gala.
Monster Bash is a state of mind — a place, like Skull Island, where our imaginations ignite and burn through our everyday jobs and life. The Bash is an appreciation of the fun movies that we all love. Whether it’s THE BLOB or THE WIZARD OF OZ, if you have fun watching it . . . that’s what Monster Bash is all about.
William Patrick Maynard — PulpFest afternoon programming and assistant marketing director — will be at October’s Monster Bash. He’ll be selling horror and movie-related materials and promoting next year’s PulpFest to the “Monster Boomers” and their “Monster Kids” at this year’s Bash. On Saturday, October 23, author Noir Hayes will also be appearing at the PulpFest tables. Be sure to stop by to visit with Bill and Noir.
If you’re a fan of silent and early sound films or a collector of motion pictures and related items, then Cinevent 52 is for you. This year’s convention runs from October 28 – 31 at the Renaissance Columbus Downtown Hotel on 50 North 3rd Street in the heart of Columbus, Ohio.
For over fifty years, Cinevent has gathered fans of silent and early sound films, as well as collectors of motion pictures and related items. The convention was co-founded by Steve Haynes — a big fan and supporter of PulpFest — who passed away in April 2015.
In addition to over 100 tables of movie-related collectibles such as posters, lobby cards, press kits, DVDs and 16 mm films, Cinevent hosts one of the country’s largest live auctions of vintage posters. The convention also features an extensive schedule of classic sound and silent films. For a look at this year’s Cinevent film program, click here.

In early November, head to Albuquerque, New Mexico for the 2021 Dum-Dum, the annual gathering of Edgar Rice Burroughs enthusiasts. Taking place November 6 – 7 at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites — Midtown, the convention is hosted by Gary Buckingham of The Burroughs Bibliophiles, the nonprofit literary society devoted to the life and works of Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Bordentown, New Jersey — almost 2000 miles east of Albuquerque — will be the location of the northern edition of Pulp AdventureCon on November 6. The one-day event will be held at the Home2 Suites, just 2.7 miles from New Jersey Turnpike Exit 7. The convention will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5.
Pulp AdventureCon hosts collectors, artists, authors, and vendors of rare pulp magazines, vintage paperbacks, golden age comic books, movie memorabilia, and related paper collectibles. The show emphasizes collectibles from 1900 to 1970, the years encompassing a significant portion of the “pulp era.” However, you will find collectibles from before and after that time period.
The winner of PulpFest‘s 2021 Munsey Award, Rich Harvey, and Audrey Parente — the publishers of Bold Venture Press — have put together the New Jersey Pulp AdventureCon each November for nearly 20 years. PulpFest 50 is scheduled for August 4 – 7, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania. We’ll be celebrating our fiftieth summertime pulp con, the centennial of pulp magazine and comic book publisher Fiction House, and the ninetieth anniversary of Popular Publications’ “Dime” magazines.

William Lampkin and Michael Chomko designed our featured image, based on George Gross’ cover for the Winter 1949 – 50 JUNGLE STORIES. Published by Fiction House, JUNGLE STORIES debuted with its Winter 1938 number and ran through Spring 1954, a total of 59 issues. Essentially a character pulp, it featured the adventures of Ki-Gor, a jungle hero modeled after Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan. George Gross painted a majority of the magazine’s covers.
The Monster Bash logo features the work of James Bama, best known for his Doc Savage cover paintings for Bantam Books. The William Powell film poster from 1933 is by an unknown artist, while Dan Parsons created the logo for Dum-Dum 2021. The Pulp AdventureCon flyer was adapted by Rich Harvey from Bob Larkin’s cover art for DOC SAVAGE OMNIBUS #5, originally published by Bantam Books in February 1988.
