PulpFest

Sunday at PulpFest 2021

PulpFest 2021  is drawing to a close, but there is still time to get in on the action. With most of our dealers getting ready to head for home, our admission for today is only $10, which covers the cost of our highly collectible program book, THE PULPSTER. Children who are fifteen and younger and accompanied by a parent will be admitted free of charge.

According to the DoubleTree’s website, masks are optional for guests and DoubleTree Team Members who are fully vaccinated. The hotel follows Hilton’s brand standard and asks those who are not vaccinated to please wear a mask indoors and practice social distancing.

With the delta variant taking off around the United States, the CDC recommends that everyone, vaccinated or not, should wear masks in indoor public settings in areas with “substantial” or “high” virus transmission. Currently, the counties of Allegheny and Butler — where the DoubleTree is located — are in these categories.

If you are exhibiting any symptoms associated with COVID-19, please stay at home. You should not attend PulpFest or ERBFest. Isolate and avoid contact with others, rest, and drink fluids. If your symptoms worsen, call your health care provider.

Although there are no programming events scheduled for Sunday, our dealers’ room will be open from 9 AM until 2 PM. Located in the Grand Ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry, our dealers’ room will feature exhibitors selling and trading pulp magazines and related materials, digests, vintage paperbacks, contemporary genre fiction and pulp reprints, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, first-edition hardcovers, series books, dime novels, original art, Big Little Books, B-movies, serials and related paper collectibles, old-time-radio shows, and Golden and Silver Age as well as pulp-related comic books and games.

Although our dealers’ room will be open, buying opportunities may be limited as most of our dealers will be packing up to head home.

If you have not been able to attend PulpFest in 2021, start making your plans right now to join the 50th anniversary of summer’s annual pulp con in 2022. We’ll be setting our sights on the Fiction House pulps and the “Dime” magazines of Popular Publications.

We hope you’ll join us from August 4 – 7 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry in Mars, Pennsylvania for a salute to “Action for a Dime.”

As always, expect a terrific dealers’ room and superb programming at what we’re calling PulpFest 50.

Fiction House was founded by John B. “Jack” Kelly and John W. Glenister in 1921. Its first pulp magazine, ACTION STORIES, was an adventure pulp. It featured a variety of genres, including adventure, aviation, detective, mystery, science fiction, sea stories, sports, and westerns.

Debuting with its September 1921 number, ACTION STORIES featured complete stories, with no serials. Pictured above is the May 1927 issue, featuring front cover art by Allen Store. Nothing is known about the artist other than this lone art credit.
