Thanks to the generosity of our dealers, PulpFest will celebrate the convention’s return with pizza at 5 PM on Thursday, August 19. All PulpFest attendees are invited to have a slice or two. We’ll have cheese, pepperoni, and margherita pizzas available.
PulpFest is more than a dealers’ room filled with tens of thousands of collectible items from pulp magazines to first edition hardcovers to original art and more.
Nor is it several evenings of fantastic presentations such as Jim Beard’s “The Shadow — Multimedia Hero” or Henry G. Franke’s “The Amazing, Thrilling, and Fantastic Edgar Rice Burroughs,” one of our ERBFest presentations.
PulpFest is people — readers, collectors, and dealers with a love for popular fiction and art. People who realize that the pulps had a profound impact on American popular culture. Now, thanks to the convention’s dealers, attendees of PulpFest — and this summer’s ERBFest — will learn just how generous the pulp community can be.
Not only will Thursday evening’s pizza be a celebration of PulpFest‘s return, it will also give us an opportunity to support our host hotel. Pennsylvania’s hospitality industry has suffered significantly, given mitigation efforts taken to limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Although the pizza is on the dealers of PulpFest, the drinks are on you. Please come and enjoy a slice or two, but be sure to support the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry by purchasing something to quench your thirst.
Whether you eat your pizza in the hotel’s Ember & Vine open lounge area or in the privacy of your own room, please stay safe and be cognizant of others.
And be sure to support and thank the following dealers for their generous contributions to the PulpFest pizza night:
Age of Aces Books, Matt Betts, Bold Venture Press, Brenner’s Collectable Books, Wayne Carey, Mike Chomko, Dearly Departed Books, Jennifer DiGiacomo, Dreamhaven Books, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Doug Ellis & Deb Fulton, First Fandom Experience, Henry G. Franke III and ERBFest 2021, Dennis Harford, Scott Hartshorn, Noir Hayes, Heartwood Books and Art, Mark Hickman, Jan Koenig, Bob McGeeney, John McMahan, Tom Martin, Drake Maynard, William Patrick Maynard, Murania Press, Garyn and Virginia Roberts, Darrell Schweitzer, Don Simpson, Steven Spilger, Todd Warren, David White, Chet Williamson, and John Wooley.
Modest Stein’s couple for the March 24, 1928 issue of Street & Smith’s LOVE STORY MAGAZINE is practicing social distancing. Not so his later couple from the September 23, 1939 issue of the same pulp magazine.
According to the DoubleTree’s website, masks are optional for guests and DoubleTree Team Members who are fully vaccinated. The hotel follows Hilton’s brand standard and asks those who are not vaccinated to please wear a mask indoors and practice social distancing.
With the delta variant taking off around the United States, the CDC recommends that everyone, vaccinated or not, should wear masks in indoor public settings in areas with “substantial” or “high” virus transmission. Currently, the counties of Allegheny and Butler — where the DoubleTree is located — are in these categories.

Although we can’t force anyone, it’s our hope that everyone who plans to attend PulpFest and ERBFest 2021 will be vaccinated against COVID-19. We will have older members attending. Please keep them in mind. Remember, we’re all in this together.
