The PulpFest 2021 Estate Auction

Due to a variety of factors including our schedule change, PulpFest 2021 has decided to postpone the Carl Joecks Estate Auction until 2022.

A retired television cameraman, electronic equipment repairman, and carpenter from Vermont, Carl became enamored of science fiction, comic books, radio, and astronomy as a boy. He was soon collecting the things that he loved.

Acquired over many years, Mr. Joecks stored his collection in a darkened room. Most of his magazines were bagged with backing boards and stored flat for protection.

PulpFest 2022 will be auctioning Carl Joecks’ pulps, digest magazines, men’s adventure and true crime magazines, underground comics, fanzines, plus a selection of joke and gag books and other material. A number of vintage paperbacks — including the very first “Ace Double” paperback issued by the company — and collectible hardcover books will also be part of the auction.

If you click on the auction tab at the top of the PulpFest homepage, you’ll open a page that features photographs of select items from 185 auction lots, together with brief descriptions of the items included in each lot. These lots were slated to sell at PulpFest 2020. Unfortunately, the convention and its auction had to be canceled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most, but not all of the lots listed on our current auction page will be part of our PulpFest 2022 Carl Joecks Estate Auction. We are planning to add more lots to the mix and remove some of the lots now listed on the page. We will be updating the PulpFest 2022 auction catalog at a later date.

The Carl Joecks Estate Auction will be held in the PulpFest 2022 programming room at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry. All attendees of PulpFest 2022 will be able to bid on the available material. People who desire to attend the PulpFest auction — but not the convention itself — will also be welcome to the Joecks Estate Auction. Additional details can be found by clicking the auction tab at the top of the PulpFest homepage.

PulpFest 2021 will hold an auction that will feature lots provided by our members. It will follow our Saturday evening programming on August 21. Please click the FAQ button at the top of our homepage for additional details under “Can members of PulpFest submit items to sell at auction?”

The April 1939 number of Double Action Magazines’ UNDERCOVER DETECTIVE is the third and final issue of this Columbia pulp magazine. Published by Louis Silberkleit — the man who started Archie Comics — it is “Lot #9” of the PulpFest 2022 Carl Joecks Estate Auction. The magazine features front cover art by Rudolph Zirm. The artist is best remembered for his cover paintings for Popular Publications’ weird menace titles, HORROR STORIES and TERROR TALES.
