February 22, 2021 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of talented pulp artist Modest Stein. Best known for the hundreds of covers that he created for Street & Smith’s LOVE STORY MAGAZINE, Stein was no “one-trick pony.” He also painted covers for ARGOSY, ASTOUNDING STORIES, CLUES, CRIME BUSTERS, DOC SAVAGE, MUNSEY MAGAZINE, ROMANTIC RANGE, THE SHADOW, UNKNOWN, WESTERN STORY, and many other magazines.
After you’ve read Laurie Powers’ PulpFest Historical — Modest Stein — From Anarchist to Artist, a wonderful overview of the artist’s life and work, visit the PulpFest Instagram page for more than thirty images by the artist. Our Stein Instagram series will run through Sunday, February 28. We’ll follow the Stein series with a look at THE SHADOW, beginning on Monday, March 1.
While checking out all our great Modest Stein art on Instagram, become a PulpFest follower. We’d hate for you to miss the great stuff that we share on the site. In the meantime, enjoy Stein’s cover art for the December 1941 issue of Street & Smith’s DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE, pictured above.
