PulpFest is lauded for both its excellent programming and its very substantial dealers’ room.
Beginning on Thursday, August 15, the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry will be home to thousands of collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and more.
Who are we expecting at PulpFest 2019? For the next three days, we’ll be profiling our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them to help you know them . . .
RICHARD MELI & JANET GEE will be representing HEARTWOOD BOOKS & ART at this year’s PulpFest. Richard is a member of the ABAA with more than twenty-five years experience in buying and selling vintage pulps, first editions, magazines, paperbacks, and other collectibles. Heartwood has more than 100,000 items available for sale, including the Robert Weinberg collection of rare pulps, digests, paperbacks and related ephemera, the Napa Valley collection of men’s adventure magazines, the Barry Levin collection, world-class Edgar Rice Burroughs material, and one-of-a-kind WEIRD TALES, Clark Ashton-Smith, and H. P. Lovecraft gems.
PAUL HERMAN is a Connecticut dealer and collector who exhibits at many pulp and paperback conventions. He offers a wide variety of material including pulps, paperbacks, and vintage digests. He is very strong in the mystery and detective fields, turning up many scarce items. Be sure to drop by Paul’s tables for a top-notch deal on some of the best collectibles around.
HEROINEBURGH is a comic book and live-action video series based in Pittsburgh featuring all-original characters. They’ll be sharing a table at this year’s PulpFest with another local comic book creator, Marvin Wynn. The comics and video episodes of HEROINEBURGH are influenced by Silver Age and Bronze Age comics, nineties bad-girl aesthetics, and 50 years of TV shows and movies starring powerful and beautiful superheroines. It’s action, adventure, drama, romance, and plenty of camp, all in the finest spandex and capes. Check out their website to learn more about the courageous champions and vengeful villainesses of HEROINEBURGH. And please welcome this local creator to PulpFest.
MARK HICKMAN, an Ohio dealer, will be offering a variety of science-fiction magazines and hero pulps, as well as comic books and original artwork from the pulps, comics, digests, and paperbacks. Mark will also be selling copies of THE COLLECTED PULP ERA, a two-volume set reprinting the complete run of his father Lynn Hickman’s classic fanzine. Both volumes are very highly recommended.
2018 Munsey Award winner WILLIAM LAMPKIN is the advertising director for PulpFest as well as the editor and designer of THE PULPSTER, the convention’s award-winning program book. Bill will have a tempting selection of pulp fanzines and other collectibles for sale at his table.
KURT MCCOY is a West Virginia writer with a lifelong fascination for monsters, ghost stories, and folklore. He’s the author of THE WEREWOLF’S HEART — a sequel to the very first werewolf film ever made — MONSTER BEACH PARTY, and more. A 2019 nominee for a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards, Kurt will be exhibiting at PulpFest 2019 with fellow writer BRAD BRADDOCK. Brad is the award-winning author of MEMOIRS OF MURDER, a prequel to the 1932 film classic, WHITE ZOMBIE. It has been praised by Bela Lugosi scholars and fans of classic horror alike. His other published works include fiction and non-fiction based on folklore, history, and horror. Check them out: their writing is sometimes serious, sometimes quirky, but always fun!
One of our very first supporters when PulpFest came to Mars, Pennsylvania was TODD McDEVITT of NEW DIMENSION COMICS. Owned by Todd since 1986, New Dimension Comics has six stores in the Pittsburgh region, including one just 2.5 miles away from Pulpfest. Please visit the store while you are in town. It’s at 20550 Route 19, Cranberry Township, PA 16066. Todd will be bringing some his dealer buddies to convention, offering our members some vintage treats for the first time.
JOHN McMAHAN sells collectibles on ebay as mybckpages. He comes to us from Oklahoma, where he has long been active as a fan and dealer. At PulpFest 2019, he’ll be selling pulps, books, comics, original art, movie posters, and more. John will also have copies of HARD-BOILED CHRISTMAS STORIES, the anthology he edited with 2006 Lamont Award winner JOHN WOOLEY. The latter will be available for book signings at our main entrance on Saturday afternoon.
PETER MACUGA will be selling at PulpFest for the second year in a row. He will be bringing many boxes of pulps and books to sell, including early issues of ASTOUNDING STORIES, up through the 1948 numbers. Peter will also have collectible hardcovers from Gnome Press and other publishers.
From Buffalo, New York, BILL MANN returns as a dealer to PulpFest. One of the founders and a former editor at Age of Aces Books, Bill will be selling a variety of aviation pulps and books.
Collecting since the early days of pulp fandom, legend has it that WALKER MARTIN has owned practically every pulp at least once! A resident of New Jersey, he’ll be selling a variety of pulp magazines, DVD’S, original artwork, and one-of-a-kind canceled checks from the files of Munsey and Popular Publications. Walker contributes a regular column on pulp collecting to Steve Lewis’ Mystery*File blog.
WILLIAM PATRICK MAYNARD is the assisting marketing director for PulpFest. He is the author of the first authorized Fu Manchu thrillers in over thirty years. He will sign and sell copies of his books, but also brings a large selection of pulp titles from his own collection to sell. In addition to manning a table in our dealers’ room, Bill will be hosting our ” Fu Manchu Film Festival” and its encore presentations, performing an author reading on Friday afternoon, and moderating our Saturday panel on “Contemporary Pulp: Writing Genre Fiction.” He’ll have a rather busy convention.
Leading Philip José Farmer publisher METEOR HOUSE will be releasing its newest title at PulpFest 2019. Pick up your copy of the first hardcover publication of the science fiction Grand Master’s GREATHEART SILVER AND OTHER PULP HEROES, a collection of six stories inspired by the author’s life-long love affair with the pulps. MICHAEL CROTEAU and PAUL SPITERI will also be selling items from the author’s estate and works created by attendees of FarmerCon, returning to PulpFest for the ninth consecutive year.
ED HULSE of MURANIA PRESS will be reviving his much admired pulp journal, BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER. He’ll have a brand new issue at PulpFest 2019, available in a smaller format and at a cheaper price, but with the same exceptional quality. The first issue will feature articles by Will Murray, David Saunders, Rick Lai, David Kalb, and Ed Hulse, himself. He’ll also have all ten volumes of the terrific Murania Press series, “Forgotten Classics of Pulp Fiction,” as well as William Corcoran’s THE PURPLE EYE, the template for countless hero pulp stories of the 1930s, and more. And don’t forget about Ed’s presentation on Friday evening: “Hollywood Pulp — From Pulp Page to the Silver Screen.”

Philip José Farmer had a life-long love affair with the pulps that he read as a boy. They influenced nearly everything he wrote, but in the 1970s he paid special tribute to them with several stories. GREATHEART SILVER AND OTHER PULP HEROES collects these stories for the first time in hardcover.
