With just over 100 days to go until PulpFest 2019, you might be getting a bit antsy for some pulps or pulp fiction. To whet your appetite for summer’s “Celebration of Mystery, Adventure, Science Fiction, and More,” here are a few related conventions that will take place in June.
This year’s Robert E. Howard Days will feature David C. Smith as its guest of honor. The author of ROBERT E. HOWARD: A LITERARY BIOGRAPHY, Smith will appear on at least one panel and be the guest speaker at the convention’s Celebration Dinner. Howard Days will be celebrating the ninetieth anniversary of Sword & Sorcery, created in Robert E. Howard’s “The Shadow Kingdom.” 2019 is also the ninetieth birthday of Sailor Steve Costigan and the 30th anniversary of the acquisition of the Howard House by Project Pride (purchased by Howard’s father in 1919).
The annual gathering of Two-Gun Bob’s fans is sponsored by Project Pride of Cross Plains, the Robert E. Howard Foundation, and the Robert E. Howard United Press Association. Visit the Howard Days home page or Facebook site to learn more about this great event. You can also write to ProjPrid@yahoo.com for information. The convention takes place in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8.
The 2019 gathering of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship is planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. Hosted by the Chicago Muckers, it will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton, located in Oakbrook, Illinois. Award-winning artist Joe Jusko will be the guest of honor. He will also provide the cover art and a frontispiece for THE OAKDALE AFFAIR, a free hardcover book that will be presented to every attendee at the convention. The book will feature interior illustrations by a dozen artists.
For additional information on the 2019 ECOF — including a schedule of events — please visit Bill and Sue-On Hillman’s ERBzine or write to Jim Hadac at 3618 Raymond Avenue, Brookfield, IL 60513-1564.
Classicon is one of the oldest pulp and paperback shows. It’s usually held in the spring and fall in Lansing, Michigan. At this time, it’s not certain when the next Classicon will take place. You’ll find more information about this one-day convention on the Curious Book Shop webpage.
Hopefully, these cons will keep your thirst at bay while you await PulpFest 2019 — the destination for fans and collectors of genre fiction — both old and new — pop art and illustration, and much more. The convention will begin on Thursday, August 15, and run through Sunday, August 18. Join PulpFest at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry, just north of Pennsylvania’s “Steel City” of Pittsburgh. We’ll be celebrating “Children of the Pulps and Other Stories” at this year’s gathering.
