Although PulpFest is well known for its excellent programming — and rightfully so . . . just click our red “schedule” button on our home page to see all of the great programming we have lined up for 2015 — it is also lauded for its very substantial dealers’ room. Beginning on Thursday, August 13th, the 15,800 square-foot Regency Ballroom will house collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and more. And remember: for those members staying at the Hyatt-Regency Columbus, you’ll be able to partake in free, early-bird shopping on Thursday evening from 6 to 10 PM. For those staying elsewhere, early-bird shopping privileges will cost $30 if paid for at the door. The cost is $25 if you pay in advance.
In addition to Thursday’s early-bird hours, the PulpFest dealers’ room will be open from 10 AM to 4:30 PM on August 14-15 and from 10 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, August 16th. Note that buying and selling opportunities on Sunday may be limited as dealers pack up for their trip home.
Who will be selling at PulpFest 2015? Today, we’ll be profiling our remaining dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them so you get to know them a little better. Away we go . . .
A resident of Virginia, CRAIG POOLE has been attending pulp conventions for years. He will have several pieces of vintage original cover art, representing a mix of genres, but with science fiction the main focus. He will have paperback cover art and, perhaps, a few digest or pulp cover paintings.
GARYN and VIRGINIA ROBERTS from northern Wisconsin will be offering a variety of pulp-related publications. They’ll have science-fiction and mysteries in both hardcover and paperback. They’ll also have pulps, pulp reprint, pulp studies and more. Garyn is the winner of our 2013 Munsey Award.
The creator of the Munsey Award, pulp art expert DAVID SAUNDERS will be selling signed copies of his biographies of pulp artists, including his father, Norman Saunders, and Spicy artist H. J. Ward. Visit David’s website at www.pulpartists.com for brief, illustrated biographies of many pulp artists. David will also be discussing pulp artist Rudolph Belarski during our Saturday night programming on August 15th.
TIM PAXTON of Grand Rapids, Michigan specializes in paperbacks and small-press, first-edition hardcovers, dealing mainly in high-grade science fiction, fantasy, and horror as well as mysteries and pulp-related material. Check out the TIM’S BOOKS website at AbeBooks.com.
BARRY TRAYLOR will be selling issues of ARGOSY and THE POPULAR MAGAZINE, a smattering of adventure pulps, copies of BLOOD ‘N THUNDER, WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE, WEST, and WILD WEST STORIES AND COMPLETE NOVEL MAGAZINE. He’ll also have a variety of science-fiction and horror hardcovers, Caxton Press mystery, adventure, and western books from the 1930s, and Carroll John Daly collections. Remember, if you have any questions concerning the PulpFest auction, please write to barry@pulpfest.com or click the “auction” button on our home page.
A pulp collector for about forty years, SHEILA VANDERBEEK is from Kalamazoo, Michigan. She’ll be bringing pulp magazines from all genres for sale or trade. Of course, the more she sells, the more she’ll be able to buy from the many fine dealers who will be attending PulpFest2015.
A longtime bookseller from Houston, Pennsylvania, WILSON WARNELD will have a pair of island tables in our spacious dealers’ room. He’ll primarily be selling hardbound science fiction, horror, and series books as well as a number of pulp magazines. Some highlights of the material that Wilson will bring to PulpFest 2015 include an early Burroughs volume in dust jacket and a scarce William Hope Hodgson first edition. A heart welcome to Wilson.
JON WEHLER is a very personable dealer and collector who offers pulps, original art, and other paper collectibles. He’ll also have lots of vintage paperbacks from many different genres. Based in Ohio, he exhibits at a variety of book and paper shows throughout the Midwest. Did we say that he’s a nice guy?
CHUCK WELCH helps to manage the PulpFest website and social media outlets like our Twitter account and Facebook sites. He’ll have information about the social media aspect of Pulpfest – the website and other online methods we use to promote the festival. If you’re a fan of Doc Savage, the man of bronze, check out Chuck’s Hidalgo Trading Company on the Internet.
Our 2015 guest of honor, writer CHET WILLIAMSON, will also be selling at the convention. He’ll have copies of his own books for sale at his table, along with a selection of pulp magazines and pulp-related books. Of course, Mr. Williamson will be glad to sign your purchases. Be sure to join us at 7:55 PM on Friday, August 14th, for his guest-of-honor presentation.
DAVE WILLOUGHBY is a long-time collector of fantasy, science fiction, thrillers, and mysteries in all shapes and sizes. A career in the Air Force sent him all over the world, but he finally retired in the Midwest, surrounded by corn fields. He’ll be bringing with him hundreds of vintage paperbacks, and possibly a few digests and hardcovers, many signed, and most one-owner. This will be the first time that Dave will be selling at PulpFest.
If you are a dealer or collector who would like to sell at PulpFest, please click the red “register” button on our home page or email convention chairperson Jack Cullers at jack@pulpfest.com for further information about the convention. (Our 2015 PulpFest advertising features artwork by Matt Fox — the cover to the November 1944 WEIRD TALES — and a small selection of covers from the Standard chain of pulp magazines.
Sanctum Books’ multi-packs are a great way to collect a bunch of the publisher’s fine line of pulp reprints. Their latest features eight more novels that inspired Golden Age Batman stories and villains and includes a foreword by science-fiction master Harlan Ellison, plus art prints by George Rozen and Graves Gladney. The sleeve for the new multi-pack features Rozen’s art for the March 15, 1938 issue of THE SHADOW.
In the late 1980s, George Scithers & Darrell Schweitzer once again resurrected “The Unique Magazine” and WEIRD TALES was born anew. The duo won a World Fantasy Award for the magazine in 1992 and put together a number of special issues, including a “Special Chet Williamson” issue in the fall of 1990. The front cover art was by Frank Kelly Freas and originally ran on the November 1950 issue of “The Unique Magazine.” Join PulpFest 2015 for a celebration of H. P. Lovecraft and WEIRD TALES, taking place in Columbus, Ohio from August 13th through August 16th.)
