Although PulpFest is well known for its excellent programming — and rightfully so . . . just click our red “schedule” button on our home page to see all of the great programming we have lined up for 2015 — it is also lauded for its very substantial dealers’ room. Beginning on Thursday, August 13th, the 15,800 square-foot Regency Ballroom will house collectible pulp magazines and digests, vintage paperbacks, first edition hardcovers and series books, original art, B-movies and serials, collectible comic books, and more. And remember: for those members staying at the Hyatt-Regency Columbus, you’ll be able to partake in free, early-bird shopping on Thursday evening from 6 to 10 PM. For those staying elsewhere, early-bird shopping privileges will cost $30 if paid for at the door. The cost is $25 if you pay in advance.
In addition to Thursday’s early-bird hours, the PulpFest dealers’ room will be open from 10 AM to 4:30 PM on August 14-15 and from 10 AM to 2 PM on Sunday, August 16th. Note that buying and selling opportunities on Sunday may be limited as dealers pack up for their trip home.
Who will be selling at PulpFest 2015? For the next two days, we’ll be profiling some of our dealers, telling you a little bit about each of them so you get to know them a little better. Away we go . . .
Hailing from Dayton, Ohio, OWEN KUBIK and RACHELL CHILTON of KUBIK’S FINE BOOKS will have a variety of books, magazines, and pulps. They specialize in both vintage and modern fantasy and adventure fiction. Newly acquired items this year include collections of western pulps, naval series fiction, and risque paperbacks from the 1950s.
BRIAN LIVINGSTON will be back for his second go-round in the PulpFest dealers’ room. He’ll be bringing a substantial number of long boxes stocked with pulps, including a collection from Indiana that has been in storage since the early seventies. Featuring titles such as BLACK MASK, DIME DETECTIVE, DIME MYSTERY, DOC SAVAGE, THE SHADOW, THRILLING ADVENTURE, THRILLING DETECTIVE, and many other detective pulps, Brian’s table will certainly do a brisk business.
A wild child for certain, but an art-dedicated soul with many disciplines, REN McKINZIE has illustrated a few indy comic books such as Dustin Carson’s HALF BREED and THE SAMARITAN by Victor Dandridge. You can find samples of Ren’s work at www.darkness33.deviantart.com. Always looking to expand his skill, Ren is sure to find new ways to utterly destroy all that is plain surface with art! A freelance illustrator who will be exhibiting at his second PulpFest, you’ll find Ren near Doug Simms’ Heroes and Games tables.
JOHN McMAHAN sells paper collectibles on ebay as mybckpages. He comes to us from Oklahoma, where he has long been active as a fan and dealer. At PulpFest 2015, he’ll be selling pulps, books, comics, original art, movie posters, and more. He’ll also have copies of HARD-BOILED CHRISTMAS STORIES, the anthology he edited with John Wooley. The latter will be teaming up with John Gunnison for a look at “Thrilling Detectives,” at 8:40 PM on Thursday, August 13th, in the 2nd floor programming area for PulpFest 2015.
Collecting since the early days of pulp fandom, legend has it that WALKER MARTIN has owned practically every pulp at least once! A resident of New Jersey, he’ll be selling a variety of pulp magazines, DVD’S, original artwork, and one-of-a-kind canceled checks from the files of Munsey and Popular Publications.
Dr. Fu Manchu was “…the yellow peril incarnate in one man…” and WILLIAM PATRICK MAYNARD is the author of the first authorized Fu Manchu thrillers in over twenty years. He will be selling and signing copies of THE TERROR OF FU MANCHU and THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU. Bill will also have Sax Rohmer and other Yellow Peril books for sale, as well as Robert E. Howard, Bulldog Drummond, Sherlock Holmes, and a variety of hard-boiled fiction available. He’ll be selling on Saturday only.
FarmerCon returns to PulpFest for its fifth straight year and METEOR HOUSE will be releasing its newest titles at the convention. Pick up your copies of AIRSHIP HUNTERS and HADON, KING OF OPAR — both original novellas — as well as the all-new, hardbound edition of EXILES OF KHO and the restored edition of FLIGHT TO OPAR. We’ll be announcing when the annual Meteor House booksigning party will take place during our regular dealers’ room hours. MICHAEL CROTEAU will also be selling items from Philip José Farmer’s estate and works by FarmerCon attendees.
In addition to the latest issue of his award-winning fanzine, BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER, ED HULSE will have several new titles from the MURANIA PRESS book line at the convention — William Corcoran’s THE PURPLE EYE and three volumes of crime and mystery yarns written by Johnston McCulley, the creator of Zorro. Ed will, most likely, also be selling his usual smattering of pulp magazines.
The author of over fifty novels and assorted books, WILL MURRAY will be selling copies of “The All-New Wild Adventures of Doc Savage,” including the new cross-over novel, THE SINISTER SHADOW. He’ll also have copies of RETURN TO PAL-UL-DON, the first volume in the fully-authorized “The Wild Adventures of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan.” Expect to see some of Will’s non-fiction books, as well. Of course, he’ll be glad to sign your purchases.
PHIL NELSON and his daughter HOLLY are from Waverly, Ohio. They will be armed with a wide variety of pulps, from ARGOSY and DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY to DOC SAVAGE and PLANET STORIES. This very personable dealer will also have vintage paperbacks, comic books, and a variety of other collectibles. He’s a fan of NORTH-WEST STORIES, TOP-NOTCH, and detective fiction.
BARBARA FISTER-LILTZ and WILLIAM HUNT have been field agents for JERRY OHLINGER’S MOVIE MATERIALS for nearly forty years. Ohlinger’s — which moved recently to a new suite at 216 West 30th Street, 2nd Floor East in New York — has one of the world’s largest collections of movie posters and stills, both vintage and current. Barbara & Bill will be bringing a fine selection of film magazines, men’s adventure magazines, hardcover and paperback books, comic books, film posters, and DVD’s to PulpFest. This will be their first PulpFest and, hopefully, the beginning of a new tradition for both them and us!

(Perhaps you’ll find a copy of the November 1943 number of THRILLING DETECTIVE with cover artwork by George Rozen at PulpFest 2015. The inventories of Brian Livingston, John McMahan, Phil and Holly Nelson, and other PulpFest dealers feature many detective pulps.
Christopher Paul Carey’s EXILES OF KHO will be just one of many fine, original books that you’ll be able to pick up at PulpFest 2015. It features all-new cover art by Mark Wheatley. Grab your copy from Meteor House.
Emery Clarke created the front cover art for the initial appearance of Dan Fowler in the October 1935 G-MEN, one of the Thrilling Pulp Heroes of the Thirties. Expect to see a lot of hero pulps for sale at PulpFest 2015. Then, be sure to join us in our second-floor programming area at 10:40 PM on Friday, August 14th for “Thrilling Heroes of Standard’s Pulps and Comics.”)
Tomorrow, we’ll be profiling the last of our 2015 PulpFest dealers. Please stop back.
